Position Title: Environmental Systems Mechanic
Department: Facilities
Reports To: Director of Facilities
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Facilities Director performs skilled work in the area of installation repair alteration replacement and maintenance of components of environmental systems such as refrigeration temperature control plumbing electrical and building automation systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installs and maintains environmental systems equipment and components such as air conditioning equipment absorption units condensers pump compressors and other electrical and mechanical systems.
- Monitors complex control systems for operation data for appropriate quality assurance purposes or for system modification purposes through manipulation of software and for operator training and direction.
- Locates problems in systems by monitoring the functioning interpreting computer readings and conducting performance tests over a period of time of mechanical electrical and or electronic systems.
- Reads and interprets blueprints schematics and other drawings diagrams and specifications.
- Prepares record and service reports.
- Provides functional supervision to Facilities Mechanics as required.
- Knowledge of the principles of operations methods materials and tools utilized in the installation troubleshooting maintenance calibration and repair of environmental electrical and plumbing systems equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of proper bending and lifting techniques.
- Knowledge skill and ability to evaluate equipment for either repair or replacement and determine the amount of time and materials necessary to accomplish the task with least expense and downtime of equipment
- Skill in the proper use and care of hand and power tools and test equipment
- Ability to work in areas of high heat dust and noise and in confined spaces or on a ladder.
- Ability to work independently during the normal workday and in a call in status.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must posses a valid Iowa Drivers License.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Six years of experience in electrical or control trade including apprenticeship; or graduation from a two-year resident instrumentation and controls program.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Physical work is 95% of the job.
- May be required to work occasionally at heights above 50 feet from structures platforms and ladders.
- Must be capable of standing constantly.
- Must be capable of walking constantly
- It may be necessary to frequently lift up to 50 pounds to waist level occasionally lift up to 45 pounds to shoulder level and occasionally lift up to 35 pounds above head level.
- Must be capable of lifting up to 100 pounds during infrequent tasks.
- Must be capable of occasionally pushing 75 pounds requiring 15 pounds-forces with hands placed at 36 inches above floor.
- Must be capable of occasionally pulling 75 pounds requiring 15 pounds-force with hands placed at 36 inches above the floor.
- Must be capable of occasionally squatting for up to 2 minutes
- Must be capable of frequently climbing 12 steps of a ladder.
- Must be capable of frequently carrying 45 pounds up 20 steps.
- Must be capable of frequently carrying 50 pounds for a distance of 100 feet.
- Must frequently operate equipment such as tractors dump trucks and end-loaders snow throwers.
- Must be capable of frequently sitting on a tractor or end-loader for up to 4 hours at a time.
- Must be capable of frequently operating a snow thrower or dump truck for up to 4 hours at a time.
- Must be capable of frequently using hand tools requiring a grip force of up to 15 pounds.
- Must be capable of occasionally using flammable and combustible liquids and lubricants and other chemicals with potential inhalation and absorption hazards.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work with interruptions during a work shift.
- Must be capable of frequently working in extreme temperatures humid and dusty environments.
- Able to work in all types of weather conditions.
- Able to walk kneel bend and twist to complete obligations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve month work year with wages and benefits established annually by the Board.
