Description:

The nurse educator promotes and supports excellent nursing care in accordance with the nursing mission and philosophy by providing learning opportunities using evidence based practice current nursing practice standards and research findings. Learning opportunities are provided to registered nurses licensed practical nurses unlicensed support staff and nursing students. The nurse educator works collaboratively with patient care managers staff nurses and other healthcare professionals and initiates/participates in hospital-wide and unit-based quality improvement projects. The Department of Nursing Education shares its expertise with all members of the health care team as needed.

STAFF COMPETENCY: Maintains nursing staff competency by providing individualized population specific unit based competencies in collaboration with nurse managers. Provides ongoing education via in-services computer based learning programs seminars journal articles unit based reference materials etc. Collaborates with nurse managers and other health care professionals to identify opportunities for education. Provides clinical consultation to patient care managers to help resolve job performance problems.

CLINICAL PRACTICE SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Enhances Individual Clinical Practice of Staff by assessing clinical reasoning skills of staff and providing learning opportunities to advance clinical competencies critical thinking and decision-making skills. Fosters the development of leadership teamwork and customer service skills. Provides educational activities based on the learning needs of staff and performance improvement data.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Provides educational programs open to Loyola staff and other healthcare professionals by assessing educational needs in collaboration with nurse managers and unit-based educators. Provides educational programs based on a patient population disease clinical conditions etc. Provides multidisciplinary educational programs that address psychosocial needs of the patient significant other(s) and family. Utilizes appropriate teaching methodologies to meet the educational needs of staff.

ORIENTATION: Coordinates and develops orientation for employees by facilitating and providing role orientation for RNs LPNs PCTs service coordinators monitor techs and other staff. Provides specialty classes to meet unit specific needs. Reviews revises and develops educational materials that reflect hospital policies and regulatory standards. Works in collaboration with patient care managers and staff to ensure orientation is competency based. Reviews/revises unit specific checklists and corresponding critical elements.

CONSULTATION: Provides consultation to administration managers and staff to ensure quality outcomes. Reviews appropriate institutional policies and protocols to ensure educational programs reflects policy and protocol content. Serves as a clinical resource for patient care staff. Mentors and actively facilitates the clinical and professional advancement of staff. Coaches orientees and guides staff to appropriate resources to achieve performance expectations. Role models and facilitates research and scholarly activities. Links staff to expert sources of knowledge. Actively fosters staff utilization of research findings in clinical practice.

TRAINING CENTER: Provides training in Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to Loyola employees who require such levels of recognition. Acts as an instructor for BLS ACLS and PALS classes. Disseminates information to the entire health system regarding changes to AHA standards.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Identifies and seeks professional growth and development within personal area of specialization to promote and maintain optimal standards of practice. Attends and participates in professional activities and educational offerings to enhance knowledge base within area of specialization. Seeks membership in professional organization related to specialty.

PROGRAM EVALUATION: Evaluates the impact of course offerings and appropriately revises future educational initiatives to meet staffs learning needs. Designs and implements evaluation tools for educational programs offered. Collaborates with administrative directors managers and staff to solicit feedback on the educational offerings.

COMMITTEE ACTIVITY: Participates in Medical Center and unit specific committees to share educational perspectives and expertise. Leads and participates in shared governance councils and staff liaison committees. Coordinates meetings and supports initiatives developed. Leads facilitates and/or participates in unit based education (i.e. journal club nursing grand rounds and quality improvement committees).

Position Requirements:
Minimum Education:
Required: Masters Degree
Specify Degree(s): Masters Degree is required; Nursing Masters Degree preferred

Minimum Experience:
Required: 3-5 years of previous job-related experience
Preferred: 6-10 years of previous job-related experience
Details: National certification in area of specialty/education expected


Licensure/Certifications:
Required:
ACLS (Advanced Cardio Life Support Certified) and/or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Basic Life Support (CPR)
Nursing - Current Registered Nurse license State of Illinois

Other: two years experience within identified area of clinical specialty in clinical specialty highly desired
