YMCA Wellbeing Services aim to improve young peoples access and engagement with education through developing mental wellbeing. We achieve this through the provision of best practice individualised support pathways including psychological intervention counselling and case management addition we deliver evidence-based wellbeing group programs both proactive and developmentally focused that meet the needs of children and young people.

Y Schools Queensland Bundaberg Campus are recruiting a Wellbeing Counsellor to join the team on a Permanent Part-Time (4 days a week) basis based in Bundaberg.

About the role

As a Wellbeing Counsellor at the Y Schools Queensland supporting young people your role is vital in helping individuals navigate the challenges they face and promoting mental emotional and social wellbeing. Offering a safe space where young people can talk openly about their feelings and experiences. Listening without judgment is crucial in building trust and understanding

What will my time look like

  • Conducting brief intervention counselling with individuals aimed at reducing barriers to education
  • Designing and delivering preventative and early intervention group programs
  • Developing the capabilities of staff by delivering YMCAs wellbeing framework Thrive including the creation of resources and training other staff on all wellbeing-related matters
  • Supporting students learning by administering or coordinating assessments formulating Personal Education
  • Plans with teaching staff and resourcing students with disabilities (i.e. cognitive sensory and social/ emotional)
  • Working with others assess mental health developmental learning and behavioural difficulties and/ or disorders to inform intervention planning referrals and Personal Education Plan strategies and management
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of evidence-based counselling approaches and techniques developmental learning and behavioural difficulties and/ or disorders and appropriate assessment tools for use in school and community settings
  • Deliver psychoeducation sessions to parents and caregivers on topics including but not limited to emotional regulation autism spectrum disorder and family connectedness

Am I a good match

  • Tertiary qualifications in counselling and/or psychology and must be fully registered or able to be registered with the Australian Counselling Association and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia
  • Highly developed skills and experience in working with young people to provide strategic support that enables students to improve their social-emotional academic and vocational capacities
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence based trauma informed practices to support young people experiencing difficulties related to mental health development disorders cognitive impairment and/or other similar conditions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • National Police Check within 6 months
  • Demonstrated capacity to participate positively in a team environment and work across other program areas
  • Computer literacy and prior experience using a range of office software including Word and Excel
  • Sound knowledge of computer systems including an ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Current drivers licence current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) and first aid qualification or willingness to obtain
