Under the direction of the school principal and the CCPS Library Curriculum Specialist the school librarian will...
- Support students staff and faculty in being effective and ethical users of information and ideas;
- Empower students to be critical thinkers enthusiastic readers and skillful researchers;
- Create and maintain a library environment that is inviting safe fully accessible flexible and conducive to student learning with equitable access to information and resources;
- Collaborate effectively with classroom teachers and other educators to design and implement units of instruction and lessons and to assess student learning and instructional effectiveness; and
- Provide leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with the mission goals and objectives of the school and the school division and is an integral part of the learning/instructional program.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The minimum performance expectations include but are not limited to the following functions/tasks:
- Develop organize and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curricula learners teaching styles and instructional strategies used in the school community;
- Implement a school library program and create/foster a library environment that supports and promotes the CCPS Profile of a Graduate;
- Ensure that school library program goals align with school and division strategic goals and planning;
- Promote reading and library use by creating and maintaining an appealing physical environment (book displays signage etc.) as well as by planning promoting and conducting activities (contests book fairs read-ins book clubs makerspace etc.);
- Coordinate/facilitate class visits to the library; maintain an equitable access schedule;
- Promote the school library program as a resource for all subject areas as well as extracurricular interests;
- Establish and follow effective processes and procedures for selection acquisition circulation resource sharing etc;
- Teach and co-teach both in the library and possibly as a visiting teacher in classrooms;
- Collaborate with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and research needs curricular content learning outcomes and information resources;
- Plan and conduct professional learning opportunities related to the school library program;
- Evaluate use and promote the use of existing and emerging technologies in support of teaching and learning;
- Collect and analyze data to improve instruction and demonstrate a correlation between the school library program and student achievement;
- Effectively guide and supervise support persons (paraprofessionals student aides);
- Plan and prepare school library program budget and administer budget effectively;
- Serve as a visible and active educational leader an advocate for the school library program and a professional member of the school community;
- Participate fully in the CCPS professional learning community of librarians; and
- Performs other assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- Bachelors Degree in an applicable field of education or the equivalent in credentialing training and/or experience;
- Possess or qualify for a professional license and appropriate endorsement as presented by the Virginia Department of Education;
- Be recommended by the Division Superintendent and approved by the School Board;
- Or equivalent training education and/or experience.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to remain current in professional practices information technologies and educational research applicable to school library programs.
- Ability to keep up to date on best practices related to such issues as materials selection collection building and maintenance circulation copyright privacy and acceptable use.
- Ability to exhibit flexibility and adaptability.
- Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills through speaking and writing as well as effective listening.
- Ability to understand issues of student privacy (FERPA) copyright fair use and licensing of intellectual property and assist others with their understanding and observance of these issues.
- Knowledge of best practices for planning instruction and co-teaching with classroom teachers and other educational professionals.
- Knowledge of the AASL National School Library Standards Inquire Include Collaborate Curate Explore and Engage and how to implement them.
- Knowledge of effective time and resource management.
- Knowledge of all relevant CCPS policies.
- Knowledge of library management system used by CCPS (currently Destiny).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in the central office and throughout the division. Frequent walking standing stooping lifting up to approximately 40 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Travel to schools throughout the division and central office is required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment exposes the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members administrators and parents is required. Contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all CCPS employees. To ensure adequate staffing positive employee morale and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
EVALUATION:
The supervisor will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
