This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977).


The role
This role is all about sharing culture stories and knowledge in a way that feels engaging welcoming and real. As a First Nations Learning Assistant youll work with visitors of all ages to bring First Nations heritage at the Botanic Gardens to lifethrough handson education programs school sessions and interpretive experiences delivered outdoors.

No two days are the same. Youll adapt how you present to suit different audiences support safe and positive learning environments and help improve programs along the way. Youll also pitch in with simple administration tasks and feedback so we can keep making the learning experience even better.

What you will bring to the role

  • Experience sharing First Nations culture knowledge or stories through education programs tours or community engagement.
  • Confidence presenting to groups of all ages and backgrounds and adjusting your style to keep people interested and engaged.
  • Experience delivering activities outdoors or in cultural educational or scientific settings.
  • A strong peoplefocused mindset with a genuine interest in creating inclusive culturally respectful learning experiences.
  • The ability to work independently when needed while also being a supportive team member.
  • Awareness of safety and wellbeing with the confidence to identify risks and adjust activities as required.
  • Comfort using basic technology for admin tasks feedback and recording visitor information.


What is an essential requirement:

  • This role is an identified Aboriginal role and therefore Aboriginality is an essential element including an understanding of Aboriginal culture and heritage. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage identification as being Aboriginal and accepted in the community as such. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification under section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. Only Aboriginal peoples are eligible to apply.
  • Current Working with Children Check.
