General Safety Specialist - Environmental Health and Safety - Colony Park North

Job Summary:

Support departments with daily Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) operations and conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with UMMC policies procedures and relevant state and federal regulations and standards. Provide guidance and training to UMMC staff on safety protocols and the correct use of safety equipment.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Degree (Associates or Bachelors) and one (1) year of experience in occupational safety and health.

Certifications Licenses or Registration Required:

HAZWOPER certification required post-hire within one year.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of applicable federal state and local laws ordinances statutes regulations rules policies and procedures. Skills in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with applicable safety codes and instructional and hands-on training ability to work in or around hazardous conditions such as exposure to flames chemicals and biological agents (required to wear personal protective equipment).The ability to communicate effectively and react calmly in emergency ability to gather data compile information and prepare and/or present reports.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes maintains and enforces policies and procedures related to general safety areas including biological chemical fire and radiation safety.
  • Develops and manages the implementation of effective employee safety training programs.
  • Conducts safety training sessions and presentations for staff.
  • Performs building inspections to identify hazardous conditions and unsafe practices helping to determine necessary training and education to prevent worker injuries; reports findings to hospital administration as needed.
  • Reviews and interprets code revisions moratoriums or equivalencies to assess their applicability to UMMC and hospital-specific policies procedures and compliance requirements.
  • Collects data and prepares reports to track and analyze safety deficiencies providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Serves as a member of the UMMC Fire Brigade and assists in their training efforts.
