At Weir Minerals were searching for a motivated student to join our Tailings crew and help shape the future of tailings this internship youll dive into the technical and economic modelling of how mining tailings can be moved most efficiently whether through pipeline slurry systems or via trucking and conveyors as cake. Your research will directly support major mining project decisions and contribute to making operations more sustainable efficient and futureready. As a result you will develop a clear technical and economic model to compare these options and support real project decisions.

Tailings Crew: Our tailings crew is responsible for developing solutions for the safe efficient and sustainable management of tailings the waste materials left over after minerals are processed in mining operations. Their work is central to both operational performance and environmental/social responsibility.

Background of the assignment. Due to the energy transition and global economic development there is an increasing demand for metals and minerals. This increasing demand is reflected in the need for the mining industry to mine and process large quantities of ore. As mine ore usually contains small quantities of metals and minerals the majority of the processed ore ends as tailings that need to be transported and stored to a Tailings Storage Facility. Depending on the tonnage and degree of tailings dewatering the tailings will be transported through a pipeline trucking or conveying. The evaluation of the different options is a time consuming task and there is a requirement to capture this in technical and economic models enabling high level assessment in the (pre) feasibility stage of projects.

Skills & Requirements

• Bachelor or Masters Opportunity: Open to students currently enrolled in a Dutch university in Mining Engineering (or a comparable field) requiring full-time commitment (40 hours/week)

• Skills & Language: Proficiency in Excel and fluency in English both spoken and written are essential.

• Profile Fit: Youre a curious and analytical thinker who thrives on exploring data and solving challenges. You approach problems with a solution-focused mindset and work efficiently with complex information.

• Adaptability: Youre comfortable navigating change and can quickly adjust to evolving project needs and environments.
