The high level:

The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) is part of an energetic team of leaders working together to leverage Reading Partners mission in the community. The Community Engagement Managers main role is to lead develop and mobilize a small team of AmeriCorps members to recruit train celebrate and retain a diverse portfolio of volunteers to serve as literacy tutors in our reading centers. Reporting directly to the Regional Executive Director (with a heavy dotted line to the National Community Engagement team) the Community Engagement Manager strategizes and project-manages the overall volunteer recruitment strategy for the region including partnership development and management external relations volunteer engagement event planning and more. The Community Engagement Manager is an expert relationship maximizer is goal-oriented and is excited by both strategic and on-the-ground work.

What youll do:

Each fiscal year recruit hire coach manage and train a team of 2 Reading Partners AmeriCorps members toward successfully reaching or exceeding volunteer recruitment retention and training goals.

  • Manage at least 1 AmeriCorps member for every 5 schools within the region
  • Aim for 90% or higher AmeriCorps retention by creating a supportive engaging and mission-oriented team experience for members (via individual management and support as well as contributing to the development of a strong regional team culture in partnership with the Executive Director and Program staff)
  • Partner with other regional staff members to recruit 100% of each years allotment of AmeriCorps members by the deadline (supporting recruitment of both literacy and volunteer-focused AC members)
  • Manage AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinators in all aspects of work through coaching professional development and managing to goals while maintaining an 90% retention rate.

Each year develop and execute on a comprehensive community engagement strategy to meet and exceed volunteer recruitment targets.

  • Oversee and manage volunteer recruitment and onboarding strategy to meet student enrollment and served targets are met - typically ranging between 800 - 1500 tutors
  • Lead and execute strategies to reach a 30% conversion rate for all volunteers
  • Lead planning and execution of both in-person and virtual new volunteer orientations
  • Oversee and execute regional onboarding strategy including acting as the regions primary Livescan provider
  • Ensure at least 85% of sessions are delivered by volunteers
  • Maintain a high rate of volunteer retention year over year of at least 30% and building strategies to incrementally increase this target in the successive years
  • Collaborate with program team members to ensure strong processes and procedures for all volunteers being paired with a student monitoring for completion and implementation throughout the program year
  • Achieve 90% or higher volunteer satisfaction rating on end of year survey
  • Codify best practices for onboarding supporting and transitioning university students from key partnerships across the region

Develop external and internal relationships with key stakeholders and collaborate closely with the Executive Director to drive Reading Partners external brand and achieve annual regional goals.

  • Lead on the execution of Tutor For A Days and one-time volunteers events
  • Support regional marketing and communications strategy
  • Work with volunteer coordinators to support the execution of the annual summer backpack campaign in partnership with the Executive Director

How youll do it:

Leadership & Management:

Demonstrate a genuine interest in coaching inspiring and developing emerging professionals toward goals. Demonstrate an ability to provide clear guidance and goals to delegate and to provide growth opportunities while supporting progress along the way. Be able to recruit hire onboard and deliver high-quality training to AmeriCorps members and volunteers. Support our emerging national network of Community Engagement Managers and other community engagement staff.

Relationship Development & Collaboration:

  • Leverage existing relationships and build new transformational relationships in the community. Establish highly collaborative cross-functional relationships and work effectively with all internal stakeholders for both organizational fundraising and program delivery. Celebrate wins with all stakeholders.

Communication:

  • Externally demonstrate the ability to genuinely promote Reading Partners and our mission through a variety of strategies. Provide excellent customer service to partners and volunteers. Have a high level of comfort with public speaking and with crafting mass communications. Be able to differentiate communication depending upon your audience.
  • Internally set up strong systems for communication and messaging tailor communication to audiences and contextualize messaging. Demonstrate a strong aptitude for effective communication remotely and in person with direct reports school stakeholders and other Reading Partners staff. Be able to conduct difficult conversations with grace and ease.

Project Management:

Create innovative solutions in the face of competition for resources time etc. with a high degree of adaptability and flexibility. Anticipate challenges and/or questions and proactively execute solutions. Understand larger strategic priorities and make measurable progress against these larger goals. Be able to make quick sound and on-the-fly decisions that consider all stakeholders. See the bigger picture and also drill down to smaller details to connect the dots.

Compensation: This is a full-time non-exempt salaried position. Pay for this position starts at $79748 annually. We aim to set salaries based on objective external high-quality market data. Our salaries are adjusted for candidates in different geographic regions. We do our very best to ensure that were bringing our best offer - therefore we do not engage in salary negotiations.

  • This role is in person.
  • Travel: This position travels regular throughout the Los Angeles region. This position may also involve occasional travel to Reading Partners National Headquarters in Oakland CA.

Qualifications

About you!

Youll be successful in this role if you:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Los Angeles education landscape and broader community
  • Have 3 years of progressive experience in customer service marketing client management community organizing or similar field
  • Have direct management experience of volunteers interns and/or emerging professionals
  • Have database management experience and high level of comfort with MS Office Google Apps
  • Have access to reliable transportation to travel within a defined geographic region on a daily basis
  • Have flexibility and adaptability in work style and work schedule including some night and weekend time
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
  • Display a deep belief in our mission and root your work in ourcore values.
  • Ability to prove eligibility to work legally in the U.S. and that you are at least 18 years of age.
