This temporary position is with NC Dept of Agriculture & Consumer Services Food & Drug Protection located at 4400 Reedy Creek Road Raleigh NC Wake County.

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $32.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).

The Food & Drug Protection Division (FDPD) Microbiology Laboratory performs microbiological analyses of food meat poultry feed and environmental samples using cultural techniques enzyme-linked fluorescence assays (ELFA) real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) automated and manual biochemical tests matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization with time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) whole genome sequencing (WGS) and serological methods. Through these methods the FDPD Microbiology Laboratory detects characterizes identifies and enumerates pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms indicative of unacceptable quality.

The selected candidates primary functions are:
1) Performing microbiological analysis of food feed meat and poultry samples using traditional and molecular microbiological techniques
2) Organizing and performing method validation or verification analyses
3) Performing quality assurance quality control and laboratory support tasks to maintain laboratory readiness
4) Performing testing and support tasks per the laboratorys Quality Management System (QMS) and ISO 17025 requirements

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

  • Experience with at least one of the following: cultural bacterial identification; serology; immunoassays; ELFA; PCR; LAMP; MALDI-TOF; or whole genome sequencing (WGS).
  • Ability to independently and accurately perform standardized and non-standardized complex tests under stringent time restrictions and accurately document work.
  • Ability to work with pathogens including Salmonella Listeria monocytogenes E. coli O157:H7 Cyclospora cayetanensis and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to apply organizational skills and high level of attention to detail.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in microbiology food science or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of microbiological analytical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
