Description

The Dispersed Recreation Technician works with the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit to provide public services across the Tahoe Basin. Based in South Lake Tahoe CA the position covers variable duties with regular travel required to recreation sites on both the CA and NV sides of the lake. The Dispersed Recreation Technician is responsible for performing facility maintenance routine custodial work safety checks and inspections and maintaining both facilities and surrounding areas in accordance with agency standards. The work is 75% field addition the Dispersed Recreation Technician maintains visitor contact and provides information about recreation opportunities forest regulations current restrictions and resource management practices in the area. Additional duties include:

  • Establish sanitation schedules and inspect operations in relation to maintenance plans
  • Provide reports on conditions and use of sites to Forest Leadership
  • Clean both roadside and/or backcountry dispersed recreation sites and replace consumables
  • Naturalize sites when necessary to prevent resource damage
  • Install and maintain information kiosks travel and regulatory signs and other signage associated with recreation sites travel and safety.
  • Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.

Essential Job Functions may include the following:

  1. 50% Facilities maintenance. Routinely service dispersed recreation sites including sinks floors toilets restocking consumables trash removal and micro trash
  2. 25% Public communication. Must routinely answer visitor inquiries when working in the field and provide knowledgeable answers; observe public behaviors and provide regulation notices when applicable. Update or install visitor signage where appropriate.
  3. 25% Ecosystem protection. Naturalize and restore areas that have been impacted by visitation and recreation; mitigate future damages through restoration process.

LOCATION

This position works in-person in South Lake Tahoe CA. The city of South Lake Tahoe is the largest metropolitan area within the Lake Tahoe Basin nestled between the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west and the Carson Range to the east. Summers are typically warm and dry while winters are characteristically precipitous and cold. The alpine community sits at an elevation of 6237ft while nearby Lake Tahoe reaches 6224ft. The region is a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers partaking in outdoor recreation activities such as hiking boating and skiing.

WORK SCHEDULE

Thursday - Sunday 10 hours/day weekend schedule and some holiday pay may apply.

Temporary Special Assignment employees are eligible to receive holiday pay. The TSAs holiday schedule will comply with the project partner holiday schedule unless otherwise specified in their employment offer. TSAs working five (5) eight (8) hour days per workweek will be paid eight (8) hours for all holidays. TSAs working four (4) ten (10) hour days per workweek will be paid ten (10) hours for all holidays.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

WAGE: $21.64/hr

Qualifications

  1. Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
    1. Knowledge of and/or interest in forest recreation area operation maintenance and use regulations
    2. Basic carpentry skills and ability to operate power tools
    3. Ability to think creatively about and implement solutions to matters related to maintenance of facilities and infrastructure;
    4. Ability to work and coordinate with other resource professionals program managers and the general public;
    5. Ability to walk long distances in challenging terrain and/or rapidly changing conditions and otherwise be in good physical condition;
    6. Ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on or off paved roads; and
    7. Ability to work on a variety of different projects with changing priorities.
    8. Possess a valid state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
  2. Education: Preferred degree in recreation management or related field. Technical certifications in carpentry or other trades preferred.
  3. Experience: 0-2 years of experience in outdoor recreation management preferred. Experience in facility maintenance natural resource management or forest management is also preferred.
  4. Background Check: Successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment for this position.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to operate a vehicle walk over uneven terrain in variable weather conditions and comfortably lift 50lbs repetitively. The noise level in the work environment can be mild to moderate.

The overall nature of the position is moderate to highly active requiring regular physical effort and occasional high exertion. There is exposure to environmental conditions such as heat cold and temperature changes as well as potential wildlife encounters.
