DescriptionThe Senior Operations Director Anesthesiology provides comprehensive system-wide leadership and oversight of the administrative operational academic research and overarching financial functions of the Department of Anesthesiology Perioperative and Pain Medicine.
In partnership with center-led leaders and departmental leadership this senior-level role serves as the key strategic and administrative leader ensuring high-quality support for faculty staff house-staff the provision of clinical services excellence in educational programs and research activities across multiple hospitals and ambulatory sites. The Senior Operations Director role sits at the base of the Departments mission.
ResponsibilitiesFaculty Administration
- Oversees faculty workforce management including recruitment and retention. The specific activities include oversight of onboarding credentialing privileging and continuous adherence to maintenance of certifications and up to date licensure and related registrations (e.g. DEA DOH required MSHS Federal and NYS coursework) for all staff including faculty house staff and CRNAs in all hospital and ambulatory locations.
- Manages faculty scheduling workload distribution leaves of absences and related operational needs.
- Serves as administrative lead for faculty wellness initiatives and confidential disciplinary procedures including interactions with COPHE medical staff services and when required disciplinary actions and reporting to the OPMC and DEA while integrating communication with medical staff services human resources and legal affairs.
- Supports the Chair in all faculty-related matters including negotiating contracts performance appraisals and leave of absence management including FMLA.
Financial Management
- In collaboration with center-led finance provides oversight of departmental financial operations focusing on budgeting and forecasting of expenses primarily based on faculty and CRNA staffing needs and compensation trends.
- The Department has complex faculty compensation schemes given its numerous sites that vary in utilization supervision requirements concurrency issues different call types and locale specific recruitment and retention issues. These schemes require consistent oversight adjustment and are subject to quarterly and semiannual calculation.
- Manages contracts and invoicing with ambulatory surgery centers where we provide leased services office-based anesthesia sites where we are directly contracted to provide service and locum tenens vendors that we use specifically at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.
- Collaborates closely with center-led Revenue Cycle teams to ensure accurate revenue capture compliance with billing requirements and alignment with institutional data and revenue cycle processes to maximize reimbursement.
- Ensures adherence to institutional policies related to procurement fund transfers travel and expense management. Analyze/resolve revenue/expense variances.
Operations
- Directs the administrative and operational functions of a large multi-site department to ensure efficient high-quality support of clinical and academic activities.
- Partners with the chair site directors and division chiefs to help standardize workflows and reduce operational variability.
- Leads administrative staff including hiring training performance evaluation maintenance of competency and career development.
- Oversees departmental committees e.g. clinical competency performance improvement equipment) and helps resolve operational issues
- Oversees the responses to patient concerns and help the Vice Chair of Performance Improvement respond to and work with the Patient Representative team.
Academic Educational Administration
- The Departments MSH based residency is the largest in the country and the MSH and MSWMSM combined training programs employ about 2.0% of all the Anesthesiology housestaff in the country. This role provides the administrative oversight of these programs.
- Collaborates with Program Directors GME leadership and affiliated institutions to ensure effective program operations.
- Manages academic budgets and ensures appropriate allocation of resources to educational activities.
Research Administration
- Provides administrative leadership for departmental research activities including strategy development infrastructure support and financial oversight.
- Oversees research staff and collaborates with the Director of Research to manage clinical trials basic science projects and other research endeavors.
- Coordinates the Departments anesthesia resources with other clinical research initiatives in other departments across the network.
- Ensures compliance with research regulations and maintains departmental research databases.
- Supports faculty in obtaining funding managing grant portfolios and coordinating cross-departmental research initiatives.
Facilities Management
- Evaluates space needs and collaborates with Facilities leadership on planning renovations construction and equipment investments.
- Assesses and recommends facility improvements to support clinical research and educational operations.
- Participates in long-term planning for departmental space utilization across hospital and ambulatory sites.
Information Technology & Systems
- Coordinates with Health Information Management and IT teams on medical records processes documentation systems and digital workflows.
- Supports implementation of center-led IT initiatives and ensures effective integration into departmental operations.
- Identifies system needs and collaborates with institutional partners to optimize technology use across sites.
Other responsibilities
Handle special projects assigned by the Departmental and Institutional Senior leadership including internal and external audits.
Work collaboratively with other Institutional departments and senior leadership including Human Resources Procurement Finance Revenue Cycle. Support Institutional initiatives to enhance organizational performance.
Maintain professional affiliations and enhances professional development to keep pace with health care trends. Represent Department at public and professional meetings and conferences. Complete Anesthesiology-specific training for billing and compliance and maintain current information. Attend and actively participate in ASA society meetings and webinars. Participate in public relations programs.

QualificationsEducation Requirements
- Masters degree in Healthcare Administration Business Administration or a related field required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive healthcare administration experience preferably within an academic medical center or large integrated health system.
