Job Summary

Position Details

The City of Auburns Finance Department is seeking a dedicated and detail-orientedB&O Tax Internto support the Tax and Licensing Manager. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in municipal finance tax auditing and financial analysis. The intern will gain hands-on experience in technical financial and analytical tasks related to the administration of the Citys Business and Occupation (B&O) tax program.

Primary Duties

Your primary duties in this role will include:

  • Work with delinquent taxpayers and unregistered businesses to promote tax filing and license registration compliance.
  • Review and examine tax returns for accuracy classification and proper reporting.
  • Process manually filed returns by ensuring information is recorded in the Citys tax and licensing program.
  • Maintain confidentiality of tax information and ensure compliance with applicable state laws and City codes.
  • Provide general support to the Finance Department including administrative tasks reporting and data entry.
  • Research on municipal accounting principles and state legislation affecting the B&O Tax code.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for this position you must be:

  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Accounting Finance Business Administration or a closely related field; or have obtained one in the last 12 months. AND
  • Enrolled in or have successfully completed an Accounting Finance or Business Administration college course.

We would love it if you:

  • Strong analytical and research skills with an interest in tax compliance and municipal finance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively manage multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word PowerPoint) and financial management software is a plus.
  • Experience in a municipal or government setting is desirable but not required.

We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program from June 15th - August 21st. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program.If you are a top candidate your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.

Our core business hours are Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day and you will have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.

Additional Information

The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:

Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $20.00

Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $21.58

Postgraduates: Step 3 - $23.15
