Across our 60 locations we provide programs in a variety of service areas including workforce development children youth families seniors and homeless prevention.
The Pyramid Safe Haven is a 125-bed low-barrier shelter operated by BronxWorks for chronically street-homeless single adult men. Located in the Melrose section of the Bronx Pyramid follows a Housing First model and provides on-site services including case management psychiatric and medical care substance use counseling meals showers and housing placement support. Referrals are made exclusively through NYCs Street Homeless Outreach Teams. The program focuses on building trust and engagement while supporting clients in transitioning into stable long-term housing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Abide by Department of Health and OSHA regulations regarding kitchen hygiene and maintenance
- Assist with weighing in receiving and proper storage of food.
- Participate in menu planning
- Provide quality service to clients during meal service
- Maintain consistent communication with supervisors
- Follow Department of Homeless Services (DHS) approved menus for foodservice
- Prepare food under the direction of the Head Cook Kitchen Supervisor and Associate Vice President
- Assist with safe handling and proper temperature control of prepared foods.
- Assist with proper functioning and cleaning of kitchen and kitchen equipment dining areas and adherence to sanitation standards
- Assist with packaging and delivery of meals to satellite offices
- Maintain food usage records and assist in taking monthly inventory
- Help coordinate activities of staff engaged in food preparation meal service and cleanup
- Deploy to other shelter kitchens for coverage as needed
- Overtime may be necessary at the discretion and approval of supervisors
- Attend relevant BronxWorks trainings
- Perform additional duties as assigned by manager
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent credentials preferred.
- Valid Safe Food Handlers Certificate required
- Experience working in a setting responsible for managing and providing (breakfast snack and supper) meals based on required standards in a congregate setting is preferred.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment required
- Proficiency in safe operation of all kitchen equipment and Department of Health Regulations.
- Strong oral and written communication time management and organizational skills are necessary.
- Experience working in a team environment is preferred
- Familiarity with a variety of cultural recipes and preparations preferred
- Reliability and being highly responsible is a must
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Ability to stand walk or sit for long periods of time or climb five flights of stairs if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
- Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
- Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
- Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather including inclement weather if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
