Introduction
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites eligible candidates to apply for a volunteer/unpaid internship with The Maryland Park Service at the New Germany State Park Complex which includes New Germany Dans Mountain Savage Highlands Big Run and Casselman River Bridge State Parks. This opportunity will provide hands-on experience in the field of Recreation and Parks Management.

The New Germany State Park Complex (Garrett and Allegany Counties)
Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to support the operation maintenance and interpretation efforts within a diverse State park complex providing for improved visitor experiences and stewardship of natural cultural historical and recreational resources. This position will experience a variety of duties including but not limited to:
- Assisting ranger staff with opening and closing facilities and customer service initiatives
- Assisting with public safety efforts such as medical emergencies and search and rescue incidents
- Staffing concessions office and pool facilities as needed
- Developing and implementing educational or recreational activities and programs for the public
- Learning maintenance skills through park improvement and repair projects
- Supporting resource conservation through hands-on projects and best practices
- Ensuring the cleanliness of park facilities
The internship runs fourteen weeks between June and September. The specific start/end dates hours and schedule will be determined in collaboration between the intern and supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must be a current undergraduate or graduate level college student. A GPA of 2.5 or above is required for academic credit.
Applicant must have a drivers license valid in the State of Maryland with no more than 5 points on record.
Applicant must adhere to a criminal history check following selection.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred applicants will have or be working toward a degree in natural resources biological sciences history health or wellness studies public relations hospitality or recreation and parks management.
Preferred applicants will have volunteer or job experience with customer service public relations money handling emergency response education outdoor recreation groundskeeping and/or facility maintenance.
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record. Please note a provisional drivers license will not be accepted as the restrictions may interfere with the job requirements.
