JOB TITLE: Dispatcher
JOB CLASSIFICATION: Transportation - MACP
REPORTS TO: Transportation Manager
JOB SUMMARY:
Schedule drivers buses and routes for transporting students to and from school and school-related activities. Promote positive District image with the public and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with developing bus routes and schedules to equalize loads meeting student IEP requirements tracking McKinney Vento ensuring safety and providing the most efficient methods of transporting students to and from assigned schools within prescribed time limits including routing and stop review.
- Assist with assigning regular scheduled runs and extra trips to appropriate bus drivers. Coordinate student transportation activities with school personnel.
- Prepare special routes for early dismissal days and assign drivers to routes.
- Operate a computerized routing system to provide assistance with all basic education and special education school bus routes and stops.
- Secure and assign substitute bus drivers.
- Answer phones and monitor radio; respond to inquiries from bus drivers school personnel parents and general public; direct inquiries to appropriate personnel if needed.
- Communicate with bus drivers school staff parents transportation personnel and public.
- Investigate complaints; identify and follow-up on safety hazards to secure corrections and authorize changes in schedules to adjust to special circumstances and events.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned to include but not limited to serving as relief driver.
- Comply with District Policies.
- Maintain consistent attendance at assigned worksite and regularly work hours specified.
- Such other related job duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
JOB REQUIREMENTS; MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Skills Knowledge and Abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
- Skill and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with all individuals in a professional and courteous manner.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain trust and confidentiality.
- Ability to develop positive amenable relationships with staff students and public
- Ability to perform professionally while under pressure and tight timelines
- Skill and ability to follow and give written and verbal instructions
- Ability to perform physical work both indoors and outdoors to include walking standing bending and lifting.
- Knowledge of and ability to use various office equipment related to job responsibilities
- Ability to operate basic computer systems including Microsoft programs routing software Kronos etc. to perform general tasks.
- Knowledge and ability to perform basic math including calculations such as addition subtraction multiplication fractions percents and/or ratios
- Knowledge of and familiarity with transportation operations dispatch functions and route planning.
- Ability to perform job duties independently read instructions maps and assist the transportation manager with determining District boundaries.
- Skill and abilities of effective organization and efficiency
- Skill and abilities of accuracy and attention to detail
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High school graduation or its equivalent
- At least five (5) years experience of bus driving and at least three (3) years of dispatch experience.
- Valid Washington Drivers License including Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and certification by the State of Washington as an authorized school bus driver.
