Under close supervision this position performs entry-level work with routine complexity and minimal discretion in decision-making. This position provides the Engineering staff with technical support through assigned projects and tasks in a variety of Civil Engineering disciplines. Tasks may include but are not limited to plan review and revisions graphics support site inspections and the inventory and listing of City infrastructure. This summer internship position is designed to be both educational and practical to introduce the rewarding career path of municipal engineering work. This work may be in the following engineering disciplines: municipal (CIP) land development transportation project management drainage and water / wastewater. This job is temporary full-time and on-site.
Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
- Provide support to the Engineering staff.
- Assist Inspector staff with field visits photo observations reporting and document filing.
- Participate in pre-development and pre-construction meetings.
- Conduct basic office functions as needed such as data entry file management and customer service.
- Assist and/or participate in public meetings committees or seminars depending on schedule.
- Perform comparative/benchmark research on City Ordinances.
- Perform preliminary engineering reviews for applications such as site development subdivision and building permits applications.
- Provide technical assistance to the City Engineer and other staff members as needed.
- Assist with entry level GIS activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or its equivalent.
- Current enrollment into a bachelors or masters degree program at an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 college credit hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates degree in Engineering Technology or currently working towards a bachelors degree in civil engineering or a science-related field.
- Experience withMicrosoft Office including Excel Word and PowerPoint.
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat.
- Experience with Bluebeam.
- Experience with AutoCAD.
- Experience with ArcGIS.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently after training.
- Interest in or familiarity with engineering as it relates to municipal government and the ability to interpret technical manuals and ordinances.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate with other employees and the public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with City employees the public elected officials and boards and commissions.
Physical Demands & Additional Information
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk sit use hands to handle and feel items reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
