West Island School is seeking aFull-Time Teacher of Design and Technology for atwo year contract startingAugust 2026 renewable by mutual agreement. The position includes a strong emphasis on teaching Food Preparation and Nutrition and the ability to contribute to teaching other areas within the faculty will be advantageous. We are a highly successful school withoutstandingdesign facilities. We are looking for a talented passionate and flexible teacher with a food specialism and who is comfortable working across a range of age groups and design subjects. The Technology faculty features outstanding facilities and dedicated support staff encouraging creativity and innovation. Students aged 11-14 learn through the IBMYP curriculum emphasizing inquiry and conceptual understanding across various design disciplines. Older students have access to a diverse range of BTEC GCSE and IBDP courses promoting a comprehensive and engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging lessons in Design and Technology with a significant focus on Food Technology while being prepared to teach other disciplines within the faculty.
  • Develop and implement innovative lesson plans that cater to diverse learning needs and demonstrate a broad range of design skills.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the Design and Technology curriculum and integrate cross-disciplinary projects.
  • Assess and evaluate student progress providing constructive feedback to support their learning journey.
  • Utilize inquiry-based learning strategies to foster student engagement and understanding.

Pastoral Care

  • Serve as a form tutor/home room teacher to a group of approximately 30 students supporting their holistic development through pastoral work.

Extra-Curricular Contributions

  • Actively participate in extra-curricular events and activities either through personal interests or in support of student-led initiatives.

Educational Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Education or a relevant subject with a PGCE or PGDE (Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma of Education) or equivalent.
  • Be willing to develop skills and teaching capacity across a range of other design disciplines including Food & Nutrition Engineering Textiles Computer Science and Product Design.
  • Strong commitment to inclusion and effective differentiation in teaching.
  • Evidence of involvement in extra-curricular programs.
  • Newly Qualified Teachers are encouraged to apply provided they meet the majority of the requirements.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience teaching MYP Design and effective inquiry-based learning methods in DT.
  • Familiarity with GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition and an understanding of its curricula.
  • Knowledge of IB Food Science and its implementation in teaching.
  • Candidates are encouraged to highlight their specialization in Food Technology and other DT disciplines in their cover letter or application.
