Job Summary

Are you a motivated Mechatronics Engineer ready to support the development and operation of motion and sensing systems for Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs) across CERNs accelerator facilities This role bridges operational support and R&D focusing on sensor evaluation experimental instrumentation and motion system development. You will contribute to the performance reliability and precision of critical accelerator components by integrating mechatronic and software control aspects into robust maintainable systems.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop test and maintain motion and sensing systems used for the control of Beam Intercepting Devices in accelerator environments.
  • Design and integrate control algorithms for electric motors actuators and sensor feedback loops to achieve precise motion and positioning.
  • Evaluate and characterise sensors and instrumentation contributing to system calibration and performance optimisation.
  • Program and commission industrial PLCs for reliable and safe control of critical hardware systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to interface hardware control and data acquisition systems ensuring seamless integration and operational reliability.

Your profile

  • Demonstrates practical experience in motion control sensing or automation systems ideally within an experimental or industrial setting.
  • Strong analytical and hands-on skills capable of both system design and laboratory work.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary work bridging mechanical electrical and software domains.
  • Excellent teamwork communication and problem-solving abilities in a technical environment.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of electric motors actuators and their control principles.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment (e.g. signal generators oscilloscopes measurement tools).
  • Experience in programming industrial PLCs for automation and safety-critical applications.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C Python or similar.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills with attention to reliability and maintainability.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to shared codebases.
  • Spoken and written English with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechatronics Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelors or Masters degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information :

Job closing date: 15.03.2026 at 23:59 CET.

Contract duration: 24 months with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week
