Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for a Residential Placement Specialist (Central Admissions and Placement) to provide each juvenile committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice with comprehensive case management services that include a thorough review of the case file to ensure that the length of confinement is accurate that the identification of services are made through the evaluation process includes the agencys practice model (risk need responsivity) and that placement is made in the least restrictive environment necessary based on risk and need. The Residential Placement Specialist is to serve as a liaison between DJJ and alternative programs to promote effective communication training partnerships and provide case management to juveniles placed in alternative placements. Additionally to develop comprehensive re-entry case plans based on the results of the evaluation period and target criminogenic need areas of the juveniles.

This is a public- facing position that requires in-person face to face work with the public to include staff and/or juveniles in our care. Requires in-person work with juveniles and/or their families both in the office and virtually. Requires in-person facility visits and participation in collaborative/multidisciplinary staff meetings.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm (subject to change based on need)

Core responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively with residents families Court Service Units and other DJJ personnel.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and professionalism as it pertains to DJJ cases and case documentation.
  • Identify possible alternative placement options and services through the continuum based upon risk and needs outlined within the commitment packet.
  • For intakes completed within the community develop a collaborative process to share information and ensure assessments/evaluations are coordinated effectively
    between the JDC CAP and BSU
  • Ensure all mental health/treatment information is requested from the CSU to support the evaluation/assessment process.
  • Facilitate orientation/intake within 24 hours of resident arrival to complete required documents.
  • Notify the parent/guardian of the resident arrival/admission to the facility within 24 hours to convey visitation process and address any concerns or questions.
  • Monitor needs and rights of residents assigned to various intake sites within the community and intervene as necessary through a minimum weekly individual contact (except for those in crises) as required by policy and procedure.
  • Complete/submit release packets to include all required forms.
  • Assist with gathering pertinent information for alternative placements to accept/receive residents in their program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of case management services to include processing of legal and other documents for admission to direct care evaluation LOS calculation
  • Knowledge of case management services to classification and ongoing case management of Alternative Placement cases.
  • Demonstrate ability to use motivational interviewing to work with juveniles engage families and parole officers to effectively evaluate and develop the initial comprehensive re-entry case plan.
  • Experience working effectively with community partners Regional Service Coordinators and outside providers.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of the Departments practice model (YASI-risk need responsivity) and how to use the tool to work effectively with juveniles.
  • Experience in case management practices preferred.
