Senior Systems Engineer – Production Monitoring and Control (PMC)

Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Austin Innovation Center or the Michigan IT Innovation Center three times per week at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Team

Our Manufacturing Systems Engineering team supports the creation modernization and enhancement of some of the industrys most innovative and complex plant floor monitoring and control systems. This team designs integrates and supports PMC and related applications for GM Manufacturing business partners.

Team members include industry-leading systems engineers developers and architects who use modern engineering practices and technologies to:

• Deliver robust production monitoring and control capabilities

• Modernize Windows Server SQL Server and GE CIMPLICITY-based systems

• Improve reliability scalability and supportability across GM plants

The Role

The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the design integration modernization and support of applications and infrastructure used for Plant Floor Monitoring & Control at GM Manufacturing plants.

The person in this role must have strong business and technical acumen to understand complex manufacturing systems; evaluate identify recommend and implement solutions that:

• Improve current PMC and related application implementations

• Leverage and modernize Windows Server SQL Server and GE CIMPLICITY platforms

• Integrate COTS and custom solutions to deliver business value and operational stability

For this role you are expected to have demonstrated success in systems and software project delivery including leading technical efforts modernizing and supporting applications and environments using a variety of tools languages frameworks and technologies.

What Youll Do (Responsibilities)

• Design integrate and support applications and systems for Plant Floor Monitoring & Control in GM Manufacturing.

• Lead modernization of the underlying PMC tech stack across Windows Server SQL Server and GE CIMPLICITY including upgrades refactoring standardization and lifecycle management.

• Plan and execute environment buildouts migrations and validations for PMC and related systems (test preprod and production).

• Build and maintain GitHub Actions and CI/CD pipelines to automate build test deployment and configuration processes for PMC applications and supporting services.

• Collaborate on environment management configuration management and automation efforts to improve reliability and repeatability of deployments.

• Partner with reporting and data teams to support data integration operational reporting and visualization solutions using SQL Server and related technologies.

• Develop and maintain SQL Server databases including schema design performance tuning stored procedures and views used by PMC and reporting applications.

• Configure integrate and support GE CIMPLICITY-based solutions as part of the PMC ecosystem including interfaces to plant floor and upstream/downstream systems.

• Implement monitoring alerting and logging solutions to improve observability and incident response for PMC environments.

• Troubleshoot and resolve system and software issues across both new and legacy systems including Windows Server SQL Server and GE CIMPLICITY.

• Participate in on-call production support and be available during off-hours or holidays for planned manufacturing downtime and critical incidents.

• Mentor junior engineers and developers and contribute to clear technical and operational documentation (runbooks design docs standards).

• Ensure compliance with GM standards and best practices including security change management and architecture guidelines.

Additional Job Description

What Youll Need (Required Qualifications)

• Bachelors Degree or higher in Engineering Computer Science or related technical field (required)

• 8 years of professional experience in systems engineering and/or software engineering supporting production systems (required)

• 5 years of experience with Windows-based application stacks including one or more of the following (required):

  • .NET / C# application development or integration

  • Windows Server administration and configuration

  • SQL Server database development and administration

• Experience with SQL Server and database development (schemas queries stored procedures performance tuning) (required)

• Experience in Industrial IT systems and manufacturing environments (required) including plant floor applications OT/IT integration or MES/SCADA-style solutions

• Strong problem-solving communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines and automation tools (preferred)

• Experience with GE CIMPLICITY configuration integration or support in a manufacturing context (preferred)

• Exposure to reporting tools and data visualization (e.g. Power BI SSRS or similar) (preferred)

• Experience with production monitoring control or MES/SCADA systems in high-volume manufacturing (preferred)

People Skills

• Superior verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams (Manufacturing OT IT vendors)

• Ability to mentor junior engineers and developers and contribute to clear maintainable technical documentation and runbooks
