Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager the Accountant performs a variety of accounting activities involving the recording analysis and reporting of financial data.
Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
- Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare and post journal entries.
- Assist with managing fixed assets and preparing related year-end entries.
- Review and records daily cash receipts.
- Prepare daily deposit for the Finance Department.
- Responsible for the Accounts Receivable function and timely invoicing and/or collections.
- Review franchise fee payments for timeliness and record them accordingly.
- Assist with budget preparation including compiling worksheets generating monthly reports and monitoring expenditures as needed.
- Reconcile various bank accounts.
- Record and track investment activity and review monthly and quarterly investment reports.
- Serve on fiscal year-end Audit Team by preparing year-end accruals schedules and assist external auditors.
- Assist with the internal audit function for the City.
- Assist with the City Project Accounting function.
- Assist with monitoring and preparing calculations for executed development agreements.
- Assist with grant management as needed.
- Maintain financial security by following internal accounting controls.
- Assist with special projects.
- Become thoroughly familiar with departmental processes and act as back up for other departmental functions.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service;exhibits tact and consideration; offer assistance and support to co-workers; work cooperatively in group situations; work actively to resolve conflicts.
- Respond to request for service or assistance; display willingness to make decision; exhibit sound and accurate judgement; support and explain reasoning for decisions; include appropriate people in decision-making process.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Required Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university in accounting or related field AND a minimum of one (1) year of accounting experience.
- OR
- A high school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of accounting experience.
- Certificates Licenses Registrations:
- Texas Drivers license or equivalent from another US State.
- Preferred Education and/or Experience:
- Masters degree (M.A.) in accounting or a related field.
- Two (2) years or more of accounting experience
- Experience working for a local state or federal government entity
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of accounting principles and practices including general ledger accounts payable and accounts receivable; methods and practices of governmental accounting.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
- Ability to interpret and apply Federal State and local policies procedures laws and regulations.
- Must be proficient in using Microsoft applications (including Word and Excel).
- Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness. Displays commitment to excellence. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality. Monitors own work to ensure quality.
- Ability to manage difficult or emotional situations.
- Ability to learn and apply new skills. Keeps abreast of current developments and requires minimal supervision.
- Ability to follow instructions and respond to management direction.
