Description of Work

The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) is the largest state agency and is responsible for the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons Correction Enterprises Division of Community Corrections and Reentry Programs and Services.

This position serves as an Administrative Specialist I providing mailroom operations support at the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Yonkers Road Facility. The duties of this role include but are not limited to: Processing reviewing and distributing all incoming/outgoing mail packages legal certified and courier mail. Overseeing typical processing of a large volume of mail and interoffice correspondence daily. Lifting of boxes bags and packages up to 50 pounds. Coordinating and reviewing work with others to ensure accuracy and compliance with policy and procedures. Managing the workorder system for the Yonkers Road Facility. Assisting with badge creation and deactivation requests for DAC Yonkers Road Facility. Tracking and ordering supplies through North Carolina Financial System (NCFS). Serving as a backup for the front desk receptionist when needed. Assisting the building facility manager with the safety and security of the NCDAC Yonkers Road Facility. Assisting with overseeing two (2) male inmates This employee will have frequent written and verbal communication with stakeholders including external delivery drivers NCDAC members and agency customers. This employee will be expected to work independently possess strong verbal and written communication skills possess exceptional organizational skills and interpersonal skills and possess strong attention to detail and accuracy. A valid NC Drivers License.

The hours and operations of the mailroom are 6:00am-4:30 pm and the 8-hour work schedule will be assigned during the mailroom hours to ensure coverage during these hours.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary $39244.00 - $68679.00

Pay Grade NC08

State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

Management Preferences:

  • Experience with handling and processing various types of mail packages and documents.
  • Ability to lift boxes packages and other items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to complete basic building maintenance work orders and supervise others tasked with completing the work orders.
  • Basic knowledge of mailroom or commercial office building operations.
  • Ability to provide high level customer service to all types of building occupants.
  • Ability to work independently possess strong verbal and written communications skills and be detailed and accuracy oriented.


Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
