TheSchool of Information Studies (SOIS)at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) invites applicants toanassociate or full professortenure-linefaculty position as part ofanArtificial Intelligence and Data ScienceCluster Hire Initiative.UWM Academic Affairs with generous support from the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute(NMDSI) is making a strategic investment in thisposition providing competitive salary supplements and start-up resources.

The new facultymemberwill join us in preparing future information professionals to understand and apply AIand Data Sciencein various information organizations including librariesarchivesand private organizations to add value by solving real-world problems.Theincoming facultywillcollaborate with NMDSI to driveinnovativeresearchstrengthencommunityengagement anddevelop AI and Data Science talent to support Milwaukees growth as a technology and innovation hub.Candidates with relevantexpertisewill alsohave the opportunitytoaffiliateas FellowswithUWMs Connected Systems which houses theMicrosoftAICo-Innovation Lab.

Faculty in this clusterhirewill be housed inUWMsCollege of Community Engagement & ProfessionsintheSchool of InformationStudiesand theHelen Bader School of Social Welfare.

The faculty hiredforthis clusterinSOISwill:

  • Producescholarshipinan important areaofLibrary and Information Science(LIS)or Information ScienceandTechnology(IST).

  • AdvanceinterdisciplinaryAI and Data Scienceresearchat UWM.

  • Collaboratewith NMDSI toaddressreal-world challenges.

  • Innovateand expandAI and Data Scienceeducational programswithin SOIS.

Compensation:

The target hiring range is $130000-$200000/year on a 9-month basis. The final salary offer will be contingent on rank and qualifications related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. inLISISTor a closelyrelated field.

  • Distinguishedrecord of research scholarship teaching and servicesufficient for appointment with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at UWM.

  • Provensuccess insecuring external research funding.

  • Demonstratedcommitment tofostering inclusive environments and supporting the success of studentsincludinghistorically underrepresentedstudents(e.g.first-generation students Pell-eligible students).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proventrack recordof interdisciplinary research collaborationrelated toAIand Data Science.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and sustaining partnerships with local organizations.

  • Strong record of community-engaged research that addresses systemic challenges employsempowered andemancipatory approaches and generatesequitableand inclusive outcomes.

  • Demonstrated contributions to advancing underrepresented areas in AI with tangible impacts on societal benefits ethical AI development and reducing biases and inequities in technology access.

  • Expertisein analyzing and addressing systemic challenges affecting urban and underrepresented populations using AI.
