POSITION TYPE: Permanent Full-time 11-month EHRA Faculty FLSA Exempt 1.0 FTE

11-MONTH AT-WILL CHAIR SUPPLEMENT: $5000

APPOINTMENT STRUCTURE: This position is a dual appointment. The primary role is an Instructor position. The secondary role is an at-will administrative appointment as the event the administrative appointment concludes the position will revert to a 10-month Instructor position with a corresponding adjustment in salary and duties.

NCSSM and the Science Department foster an environment of collaboration across departments and divisions and support community-engaged service and research.

Description of Duties:
Position reports to the Dean of Science as both Instructor and Chair of Biology.

Chair responsibilities include: participation in regular administrative meetings; collaboration with other Science Chairs; hiring supervision and evaluation of Biology faculty; budget management; scheduling of courses; oversight of Biology lab equipment and lab safety.

As an instructor this position is responsible for instruction for two classes each semester and each January Term. Specific courses for 2026-2027 include Molecular Genetics Classical Genetics and Research in Biology I II III.

General duties include:
*Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals
*Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills
*Hold tutorial sessions as outlined by the department
*Regularly monitor and evaluate students progress
*Provide students with resources and feedback on their performance
*Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning
*Model for students responsibility to self and others
*Follow NCSSMs philosophy policies and procedures
*Attend departmental discipline faculty meetings; effectively collaborate with colleagues
*Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities

Participate in one or more of the following activities:
*Serve as academic advisor sponsor a club competition or event
*Serve as an officer of Faculty Senate
*Provide administrative support such as managing Teaching Assistants
*Provide information service and expertise to other schools and organizations
*Assist students on special projects independent and individual study and seminar-based studies
*Participate in the Admissions Process by recruiting selecting and advising prospective students
*Participate in NCSSM alumni activities
*Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.

Occasional travel with students is expected for the Research in Biology course in association with science competitions and/or scientific meetings.

Candidates must possess a valid drivers license with no serious driving-related convictions.

This is an 11 month position with the option to teach Research in Biology students for 3 weeks during the summer.

  • Experience teaching biology
  • Commitment to engaging gifted and motivated students in face-to-face and online classroom settings
  • Enthusiasm for student-centered hands-on lab activities and familiarity with educational and laboratory technology
  • Interest in emphasizing quantitative approaches to science content
  • Content expertise in genetics and experience conducting biology research with students are required.

Chair

  • Experience with supervision or evaluation of teaching faculty
  • Experience with budgeting and spending
  • Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills including the use of collaborative tools to create and manage documents spreadsheets and presentations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and Experience:

Masters degree or higher in Biology Science or Science Education; demonstrated track record in Biology education; preparation for teaching a student population with a broad range of background knowledge as shown by training or experience; experience in the use of educational technology. Evidence of supervisory experience.
