Job Summary

The Stroke Program Clinical Coordinator collaborates with nursing medical staff and other health professionals to plan deliver and evaluate care within the University of Iowa Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC). The Clinical Coordinator provides leadership for nursing personnel in delivering specialized care to the cerebrovascular patient population as well as facilitating treatment plans across the continuum of care.

This position provides expertise in neuroscience nursing to lead initiatives that improve nursing quality and related services. This includes leading or participating in evidence-based projects within the CSC and partnering with Clinical Practice Leaders or Nurse Practice Leaders to implement practice changes.

Responsibilities also include providing specialized health education to patients and health profession students and residents applicable to patients with cerebrovascular disease. This requires communicating detailed complex medical information to a variety of audiences.

The Clinical Coordinator receives direction from the senior Clinical Practice Leader in the Comprehensive Stroke Center as well as the Comprehensive Stroke Center Director.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a clinical resource and consultant to the stroke patient population.
  • Lead clinical care delivery for the stroke patient population at the microsystem level focusing on improving outcomes through evidence-based practice and research.
  • Design implement and evaluate staff and patient/caregiver educational programs handouts and resources.
  • Communicate detailed complex medical and technical information effectively to varied audiences including healthcare staff patients students and residents.
  • Provide support for the Code Stroke Process.
  • Facilitate evidence-based projects for the stroke program and integrate findings into clinical practice.
  • Ensure compliance with policies documentation standards and quality improvement (QI) initiatives; report variances and recommend enhancements to policies and procedures.
  • Supervise care delivery for nursing staff students and residents within the stroke program providing evaluative feedback and performance recommendations.
  • Support stroke center recertification and readiness across all departments and teams caring for stroke patients at UI Health Care.

Paygrade: 4B - Professional and Scientific Pay Structures University Human Resources - The University of Iowa

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Five (5) 8-hour shifts Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30 AM 5:30 PM.

Education requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Science Nursing degree is required
  • Certification in Neuroscience of Stroke Nursing (i.e. CNRN SCRN NVRN) required within one year of position start date

Experience Requirements:

  • One (1) year of relevant nursing experience is required.
  • Experience in management of neuroscience patients is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
  • Must demonstrate positive verbal communication skills.
  • Previous leadership experience as evidence by Committee Chairmanship charge nurse etc.
  • Proficient in computer skills (i.e. Word Excel PowerPoint access).

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master of Science Nursing degree is desired.
  • Certification in Neuroscience of Stroke Nursing (i.e. CNRN SCRN NVRN) upon hire is desired.
  • One year of current experience at University of Iowa Health Care highly desired.
  • Experience in the management of stroke patients desired.
  • Previous experience with detailed chart review and data abstraction desired.
