Breakthrough Summerbridge Instructional Coach Summer 2026

  • Subjects: Humanities Math Science
  • Compensation: $5692 stipend for ICs new to this role at BTSB and increases for returners based on the number of years at BTSB.

San Francisco University High School wishes to announce a full-time opening for the position of Breakthrough Summerbridge Instructional Coach Summer 2026. Breakthrough Summerbridge founded in 1978 at San Francisco University High School (UHS) is a tuition-free year-round intensive academic enrichment and advocacy program. Founded by Dennis Collins former head of San Francisco University High School and two pioneering faculty members Lois Loufbourrow and Mal Singer the program they envisioned would utilize the resources of University High School to serve the city of San Francisco. It is the flagship site of the Breakthrough Collaborative. Today there are 25 Breakthrough programs around the country.

For over 40 years Breakthrough Summerbridge has advanced three primary goals:

  • Preparing ambitious middle school students from under-resourced circumstances to enter and thrive in well-matched high schools for the purpose of securing admission to succeeding in and graduating from a four-year college
  • Providing intensive summer teaching internships for high school and college students (Teaching Fellows) who are passionate about the power of education and creating meaningful volunteer experiences throughout the academic year for members of the UHS and San Francisco communities
  • Transforming lives through the unique and powerful relationship between the Breakthrough Summerbridge and UHS communities and their families

About the Role

Instructional Coaches (ICs) are experienced and successful professional educators who provide content-specific support and mentoring for Breakthrough Summerbridges Teaching Fellows (TFs) and engage fully in the Breakthrough Summerbridge community. ICs dictate the level of academic rigor during Breakthrough Summerbridges summer program through their interactions with TFs approval of TF lesson plans and regular feedback on classroom observations.

Each IC supervises two Teaching Fellows in one subject area and grade level (for example: Humanities 9 or Science 7) leads and participates in professional development workshops contributes to grade-level Professional Learning Community (PLCs) observes classes evaluates lesson plans and meets frequently with individual Teaching Fellows regarding their on-going work. ICs also plan and lead a teaching team meeting once per week. As the only professional teachers on-site ICs are accountable for the quality of instruction Breakthrough Summerbridge students receive and are responsible for supporting Breakthrough Summerbridge TFs through their first teaching experience.


Instructional Coach Duties and Commitment

Program Dates: June 8 - July 31 2026

Pre-summer

  • Attend pre-summer IC training session on Saturday May 2nd from 8am-4pm at UHS
  • Complete pre-summer curriculum planning as assigned
  • Consult with BTSB administrative staff regarding curriculum
  • Refine existing unit plans in specific content area as needed
  • Conference with program staff to plan teacher orientation workshops (see dates below)

Orientation Week June 8 June 16 2026

  • Attend participate in and lead orientation week workshops
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate teacher training workshops on topics such as classroom management lesson planning DEI and teaching practices specific to content area
  • Guide TFs through lesson planning and general preparation for the summer
  • Become familiar with the Breakthrough Teacher Rubric (BTR)
  • Plan and lead a teaching team meeting

Six-Week Summer Program June 17 - July 24 2026

  • Review lesson plans and provide actionable feedback on how to revise
  • Maintain a big picture understanding of the curriculum and guide TFs in making adjustments as necessary
  • Observe Teaching Fellows in the classroom as part of the daily IC Observation Schedule
  • Conduct at least one weekly growth conference with each TF providing concrete feedback on their lessons and classroom experience.
  • Plan and lead teaching team meetings once per week
  • Plan and lead weekly grade-level Professional Learning Community (PLCs) meetings
  • Participate in weekly check-ins with the Director of Programming and Instruction and other ICs
  • Complete TF rubric for each assigned TF weekly to monitor growth in TF competencies
  • Work with IC team to determine professional development needs for TFs and lead at least one professional development session
  • Communicate regularly with BTSB Director of Programming and Instruction regarding TF progress
  • Ensure your assigned TFs complete their Student Evaluation reports according to the BTSB guidelines
  • Engage fully in the Breakthrough Summerbridge community
  • Substitute teach as needed in the case of TF absence
  • Supervise Snack and/or Lunch on a rotating schedule
  • Collaborate with colleagues in a challenging fun and supportive environment
  • Work with a diverse group of highly motivated students staff and teachers
  • Learn how to receive and deliver actionable feedback

*Additionally there is a need for 1-2 Instructional Coaches to supervise Makeup Days on Friday mornings. ICs who facilitate Makeup Days will be compensated.

Wrap Up Week July 27 - July 31 2026

  • Submit a final evaluation of each of your assigned TFs to SB Admin Team
  • Write an end of summer letter highlighting strengths and growth areas for each TF
  • Host final growth conferences with each TF to review the final evaluation and end of summer letter
  • Oversee and support TFs in completing end of summer deliverables including Celebration presentations and student evaluations
  • Create a curriculum map with TFs to provide revisions and suggestions on curriculum for next summer
  • Evaluate overall summer program in Exit Interview and feedback surveys

  • Orientation Days
    • Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Student Programming Days
    • Instructional Coaches work in-person Monday - Thursday
      • Mondays and Wednesdays 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
      • Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 am - 12:30 pm hours will extend until 1:15p when assigned lunch supervision
  • Wrap-Up week
    • Monday and Tuesday 8:00am - 4:30pm (remote)
    • Wednesday evening for Celebration
    • Friday 9:00am- 1:00pm

  • First two weeks of programming - ICs stay until l 2:20pm on some days to support grade-level Study Hall
  • Back to Summerbridge Night - June 24 2026 (late evening)
  • Celebration - July 29 2026 (late evening)

  • Independence Day Holiday - July 3 2026

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required; masters degree preferred
  • Outstanding track record as a professional teacher for at least three years (preferably in grades 6-12)
  • Outstanding knowledge of subject matter and broad knowledge of available resources
  • Ability to deliver positive constructive and honest feedback both written and verbal
  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation
  • Superior presentation writing and organizational skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; ability to hold others to high standards while also offering support and maintaining positive relationship
  • Familiarity with the following platforms: Google Suite Zoom (Google Classroom knowledge is helpful)
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
