Job Description:
A Mechanical Draftsman in a steel manufacturing companytranslates engineering designs and specifications into precise technical drawings and plans for the fabrication and assembly of steel components and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Create Technical Drawings:Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings schematics and models of mechanical components equipment and systems using CAD software (e.g.AutoCAD SolidWorks Creo Tekla).
- Interpret Engineering Specifications:Work from rough sketches specifications and calculations provided by engineers to gather all necessary data for detailed drawings.
- Develop Fabrication & Assembly Plans:Prepare general arrangement (GA) fabrication (shop) and erection drawings for items such as pressure vessels heat exchangers steel structures and material handling equipment.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOM):Calculate and prepare comprehensive material lists quantities and weight estimations required for manufacturing and procurement.
- Ensure Compliance and Accuracy:Verify that all designs and drawings adhere to industry standards (e.g. ASME ISO BIS) safety regulations and project-specific requirements.
- Collaborate and Coordinate:Work closely with engineers project managers and manufacturing/shop floor personnel to resolve design issues incorporate feedback and ensure smooth production.
- Manage Documentation:Maintain an organized system for all drawing files revisions (Engineering Change Notes/Requests) and project documentation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education:An Associates degree Diploma or ITI in Mechanical Drafting Engineering Technology or a related field is typically required.
- Technical Proficiency:Expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) software including 2D drafting and 3D modeling tools.
- Mechanical Knowledge:A strong understanding of mechanical design principles manufacturing processes (especially steel fabrication and welding) and material properties.
- Attention to Detail:Meticulous attention to detail is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of dimensions tolerances (GD&T) and specifications to minimize errors and waste.
- Problem-Solving:Ability to identify potential design problems and work with the engineering team to develop effective solutions.
- Communication:Strong technical communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders like clients and suppliers.
In essence a mechanical draftsman is a vital link between the design concept and the physical production of steel products ensuring that engineered plans are accurately translated into actionable manufacturing instructions.
