Job Summary

  • Completion of a 2 year diploma with an ecology biology landscape or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in wildfire management or related experience

Assets:

  • Registered Professional Forester or other related professional designations

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of wildfire and restoration techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of best practices in forest grassland or wetland ecology
  • Ability to identify native plants and legislated weeds
  • Ability to write detailed reports and maintain detailed records
  • Ability to use ArcGIS software and ESRI applications
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively deal with the public
  • Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
  • Strong innovative and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency in Google applications including but not limited to Google Doc Google Sheets and Google Meets
  • Knowledge of Municipal Provincial and Federal environmental policies and regulations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent)
  • Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Reporting to the Natural Area Operations Ecologist the Wildfire Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological health of our natural spaces and ensuring compliance with the City of Edmontons environmental standards. This role requires effective management of tasks and time along with strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.

In this role you can expect to;

  • Actively assess areas for wildfire risk and recommend fuel mitigation treatments
  • Coordinate fuel mitigation treatments with internal operations and contractors
  • Collect data in the field with GIS Software
  • Work with the Wildfire and Urban Forest Technicians to confirm timing and priority of sites requiring assessment
  • Communicate with stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective fuel mitigation
  • Conduct wildfire and restoration monitoring and share recommendations
  • Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
  • Respond to public complaints or inquiries orally or in writing
  • Perform other related work as required
