Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing the installation adjustment maintenance troubleshooting and repair of all types of locks and hardware as well as perform rough and finished carpentry duties relative to work in the construction renovation and maintenance of City of Regina facilities that include buildings grounds and auxiliary equipment. This position reports to the Trades Coordinator.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Install adjust maintain troubleshoot repair and replace door locks padlocks tumbler locks combination locks and various other lock hardware such as panic bars electric release mechanisms door checks latches catches fasteners and door closures while performing the necessary carpentry.
- Design master key systems which include sub-master and single keys and maintain records.
- Operate key cutting machine.
- Perform general glazing installations as required.
- Repair and install all types of hardware and locking systems including panic hardware closers (hydraulic and mechanical) lock sets lock cylinders hinges thresh-holds door stops etc.
- Through use of standard carpentry tools construct erect install renovate and repair buildings structures furniture equipment and components using a variety of standard building materials.
- Read drawings or sketches to determine materials required dimensional requirements and installation procedures. May be required to prepare sketches of proposed construction such as wall assemblies or millwork.
- Liaise with other internal and external groups to ensure the projects/workorders are completed safely accurately and in a timely manner.
- Arrange for sub-contract work as required and inspect the work of sub-contractors to ensure conformance with specifications and quality standards.
- Supervise other tradespeople as required.
- Perform related work as required.
Key Qualifications
- The knowledge skills and abilities required for this position are obtained through minimum of 4000 hours of locksmith experience in the last 5 years.
- Willingness to obtain Locksmith Certification (PCDI/Penn Foster etc.) within 2 years.
- Completion of a Journeypersons Certificate in the Carpentry trade combined with two (2) to three (3) years journeyperson experience in the last five (5) years.
- Previous experience in electronic locking systems is an asset.
- Knowledge of emerging hardware and technology to support hardware selection for Capital projects.
- Ability to independently perform journeyperson-level carpentry and locksmith work with sound judgement and accountability.
- Knowledge of the National Building Code City of Regina Building Bylaw Provincial Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards and related regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
- Ability to plan and organize work and maintain accurate records of labour materials and equipment.
- Ability to use judgement and initiative to adapt procedures and resolve unusual problems.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge and ability to use various computer software programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform physical labour including heavy lifting.
Working/Other Conditions
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan drivers license and 1st Aid Certificate.
- The employee may be required to work shifts and will be expected to provide a standard set of hand tools.
