Guardian Australia is part of Guardian News & Media (GNM) publisher of. As a leading global media organisation we are renowned for our pioneering independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.

Guardian Australia is looking for a producer/sound engineer to work on our daily news podcast Full Story. The role involves pitching and producing news podcasts sometimes at a short deadline with Guardian Australia reporters and external talent. You will be required to book and organise talent help with the structure of the show edit audio contribute to and manage production workflow and help maintain studio equipment and software.

This role is being offered on a full-time permanent basis. This role is open to candidates based in either Sydney or Melbourne.

In this role you will

  • Develop a strong understanding of our multimedia podcast strategy and contribute ideas that align with its values style and content
  • Contribute to the planning of newsgathering and output joining meetings and suggesting ideas
  • Help to develop and manage a production workflow and maintain studio equipment and software
  • Work closely with the Executive Producer Podcasts and senior producers to plan content
  • Create project and signal chain templates for editing in Reaper. Experience in Reaper is preferred but not essential.
  • Train producers on how to use audio equipment
  • Train producers to edit and mix in Reaper
  • Assist in training non-audio specialists in presentation and recording
  • Clean and repair audio
  • Assist in recording and content gathering activities
  • Creative sound design of projects
  • Undertake fine edits on edited work
  • Insert and mix music and sound effects into edited work
  • Enact feedback on edits
  • Mix and master finished projects for publication
  • Undertake content edits when necessary
  • Mix sound for video projects when necessary
  • Work with external providers and platforms as required to produce audio content
  • Problem solve tech issues with equipment and software
  • Assist in tracking and maintaining audio equipment and facilities

Knowledge and experience

  • Understanding of the editorial aims and values of the Guardian
  • Experience in engineering podcasts or audio features
  • Significant experience editing dialogue
  • Experience with audio editing software - able to cut tape fast to a high quality and mix multi voice packages well
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • Experience recording audio in studio and in the field
  • Ability to consistently deliver on deadline
  • Ability to innovate in audio
  • Understanding of the latest developments in audio
  • Awareness of the needs and interests of the Guardians readers/audiences
