Fire Equipment Shop Supervisor
Chicago Metropolitan Fire Prevention (CMFP)
Job Responsibilities:
Department Operations
- Oversee and direct all Fire Equipment Department operations to ensure efficient orderly and compliant execution of work.
- Establish maintain and enforce department policies procedures and workflows.
- Ensure daily staffing coverage sufficient to meet operational and customer needs.
- Coordinate shop field and administrative activities to meet service commitments.
- Perform hands-on fire equipment service work as needed to support department operations training and customer commitments.
Customer Service
- Deliver a consistently high level of service that meets or exceeds customer expectations.
- Act as a point of escalation for customer concerns and ensure timely resolution.
- Support customer retention through reliability professionalism and service quality.
Quality Control & Compliance
- Ensure all work performed in the shop field and office meets company standards and applicable codes.
- Maintain compliance with NFPA DOT OSHA and other applicable regulations.
- Ensure shop equipment tools and processes remain compliant and properly maintained.
- Review completed work to verify accuracy documentation and regulatory adherence.
Personnel Management
- Maintain staffing levels appropriate to department workload and growth objectives.
- Supervise coach and hold department personnel accountable for performance and professionalism.
- Ensure technicians follow established procedures and safety practices.
- Address performance issues promptly and professionally.
Training & Education
- Remain current with applicable code requirements including DOT certifications.
- Provide ongoing training to technicians including preparation for required license and certification renewals.
- Communicate code changes procedural updates and best practices to department staff.
Inventory Control
- Maintain accurate and effective inventory control of fire extinguishers parts agents cylinders and supplies.
- Ensure inventory levels support operational needs while controlling costs.
Invoicing & Administration
- Complete and/or approve all Fire Equipment Department invoicing accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensure service records tags and documentation are completed and properly maintained.
Sales & Growth
- Perform worksite surveys when required.
- Prepare customer pricing and written proposals.
- Support and drive year-over-year department growth through service quality pricing strategy and customer relationships.
Profitability
- Review and establish competitive pricing.
- Monitor department performance to ensure acceptable profit margins.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency reduce waste and increase profitability.
Additional Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Operations.
Requirements
- Minimum of three (3) years experience in a fire equipment servicerelated business.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of fire equipment service operations and applicable codes.
- Proven leadership ability with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Highly motivated results-oriented and accountable.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and standard business systems.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a shop and warehouse environment.
- Ability to stand walk bend kneel and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to lift carry and move fire extinguishers cylinders and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely use hand tools testing equipment and shop machinery.
- Ability to work both at a desk and in active service environments as required by operational needs.
Compensation:
This role offers hourly compensation based on experience ranging from $26.00-$30.00 hourly. Compensation beyond this range may be considered for additional certifications and years of experience.
