Job Summary

The Utica City School District is seeking applicationsfrom qualified candidates for the following opening:

General Mechanic

Bargaining Unit: Central and Northern New York Building and Trades Council AFL-CIO (CNNYBTC)

Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive Position

The incumbent performs skilled work involving two (2) or more mechanical trades. This work is skilled and involves responsibility for the efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of plumbing heating mechanical and electrical tasks. Employee is called upon to perform installation maintenance and repair work. Employee shall prioritize plan and layout work for new installations and alteration to existing installations and repair consistent with building codes. The General Mechanic may devise their own methods for accomplishing assigned tasks and may work independently or in groups according to the job(s) assigned. All work is subject to review through inspection in progress or upon completion of the assignment by a supervisor. Employee works under general supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Installs maintains and replaces plumbing lines pipes and fixtures;
  • Installs maintains and replaces electrical wiring controls circuit breakers switches and light fixtures;
  • Installs maintains and replaces heating pipes boiler parts and plumbing fixtures;
  • Performs general carpentry and painting services;
  • Maintains air conditioning systems;
  • Repairs minor parts for gas and electric appliances;
  • Repairs and replaces worn faucets sinks sewers storm sewers pipe couplings etc.;
  • Installs replaces and repairs various types of locks;
  • Conduct inspection for facilities to determine maintenance needs and recommendations for repair-based maintenance problems;
  • Perform related duties as required;
  • May be required to maintain mobile warehouse;
  • May be required to drive to and from work sites; and
  • May be required to operate electronic equipment to enter work orders purchase orders and supplies.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of the common practices tools terminology and accident precautions of the trade. Good knowledge of the principles practices methods and tools used in the electrical trade;
  • Good knowledge of the methods techniques materials tools and equipment used in the carpentry and painting trades;
  • Skilled in the use of the tools of the aforementioned trades;
  • Ability to read blue prints and plans;
  • Ability to plan and layout complete varied craft works;
  • Ability to estimate materials and labor required to complete a project;
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to resolve most job-related problems that may arise;
  • Ability to work and positively interact with multicultural communities and backgrounds;
  • Ability to work in an educational setting;
  • Ability to work independently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDING SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from High School and five (5) years of journey level experiencein plumbing heating electrical or carpentry trades orin general mechanics.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Must have keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Drivers license to include a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements;
  • Have and maintain a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a patter of repeat violations;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
  • Fingerprint clearance through OSPRA.
