Job Summary

Position Summary:

The RN Oncology provides specialized nursing care to patients receiving cancer treatments and to those with complex medical needs within the oncology service line. This role delivers comprehensive assessments administers chemotherapy and supportive therapies and closely monitors patients for treatment response and potential adverse effects. Working as part of a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team the RN Oncology supports patients and families through education symptom management and compassionate guidance throughout the care journey. This position contributes to safe evidence-based oncology practice and high-quality outcomes through close coordination with physicians pharmacists and other care team members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans for oncology patients in alignment with clinical standards and treatment protocols.
  • Administer chemotherapy immunotherapy and other cancer-related treatments safely and accurately while monitoring for side effects and patient tolerance.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses treatment plans symptom management and available supportive resources.
  • Maintain precise documentation of assessments interventions treatment administration and patient responses in the electronic health record.
  • Collaborate with physicians pharmacists and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care clarify treatment orders and support continuity of care.
  • Monitor patients for clinical changes and respond quickly to urgent needs to promote safety and treatment effectiveness.


Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Current or temporary RN license in ND or compact RN licensure
  • BLS certification required preferably at hire but no later than 30 days from date of hire OCN/ONCC certification strongly preferred
  • Prefer ACLS certification attained during employment

Educational Requirements:
  • BSN preferred
  • Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration within 6 months of date hired to be replaced by Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course within 18 months of hire renewed per certification requirements

Experience Requirements:
  • Oncology nursing experience strongly preferred
  • Use of electronic health record required

Special Skills or Training Requirements:
  • Computer knowledge Good communication skills

Physical Requirements:

The RN Oncology is frequently required to stand walk and move between patient rooms and treatment areas throughout the shift. The role involves assisting patients with mobility positioning and transfers as well as handling infusion equipment and supplies which may require lifting or pushing. Adequate vision hearing and manual dexterity are essential for administering medications operating infusion pumps and responding to clinical cues in a fast-paced care environment.

Environmental Requirements:

The position works in an outpatient or inpatient oncology care environment with routine exposure to patients experiencing acute and chronic illness. Work may involve handling hazardous medications exposure to infectious diseases and contact with bodily fluids requiring strict adherence to PPE chemotherapy-handling precautions and infection-prevention protocols. The role also requires functioning in a setting with frequent interruptions emotional interactions with patients and families and periods of high patient volume.
