Job Summary

The OCDSBs Continuing Education Department is looking to establish a pool of qualified applicants to staff future casual tutoring positions within the Literacy and Numeracy program.

Rate of Pay: $21.49 - $26.86 per hour 4% vacation pay

About the Literacy/Numeracy Program:
Our Literacy/Numeracy Program provides students in grades 7-12 with a supervised opportunity to complete review practice and organize their work within a small group and/or one-on-one settings.

The program assists students in moving toward achieving greater academic success and meeting Provincial standards across all disciplines with specific focus on Science Mathematics Social Science English and Language Arts.

These programs are offered after school between the hours of 3:30 - 8:00pm.

We currently have programs running in the following locations:

  • Gloucester HS

  • Strathcona Community Center (731 Chapel Street Ottawa)

  • Ridgemont HS

  • Longfields Davidson Heights SS

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Provide one-on-one or small-group instruction to help students improve their academic performance prepare for examinations or work towards provincial standards.

  • Evaluate students current knowledge level learning style and specific areas of growth;

  • Develop tailored lesson plans and study strategies that align with the Ontario K-12 School Curriculum;

  • Explain complex concepts in a simplified and clear manner. Use various tools (visual aids practice problems or interactive technology) to reinforce learning;

  • Evaluate the progress of students and provide regular feedback to parents guardians and/or day school teachers.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education with a preference to candidates who have completed or are currently in a Teacher Education program in a recognized post-secondary institution in Ontario;

  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Certification in J/I/S is an asset;

  • Previous experience in teaching or tutoring students in grades 7-12;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • A passion for helping students succeed with the ability to demonstrate patience and empathy;

  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles;

  • Knowledge of the Ontario K-12 School Curriculum.

  • Experience working with G-Suite (Gmail Google Classroom Google Docs Google
    Sheets etc.) and other digital tools to engage students;

  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a team environment;

  • Strong time-management skills to keep sessions on track and meet deadlines for exams or assignments.
