TITLE: Instructional Specialist

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: 1.0 FTE; 184-day contract

SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Exempt - Certified

GENERAL STATEMENT of RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position acts primarily as a resource to novice teachers as they acclimate to the role of Teacher. It is designed to build teacher capacity to implement a quality instructional program that is research-based and differentiated for student needs. The Instructional Specialist supports teacher growth in implementing quality first instruction to enable achievement for all students through regular classroom observations and teacher feedback sessions. The Instructional Specialist assists teachers with developing skills in the preparation of effective learning (lesson) plans presentation of content classroom management and school and community communications.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

  • Provide mentor acclimation support to beginning teachers.
  • Provide support to teachers (primarily novice teachers experienced teachers as needed) in their classroom through coaching modeling and mentoring predicated upon research-based best practices.
  • Assist teachers (primarily novice teachers experienced teachers as needed) in the development and implementation of effective classroom management strategies individual behavioral intervention plans instructional planning and classroom organization as needed.
  • Conduct frequent observations and conferences with teachers (primarily novice teachers experienced teachers as needed) to improve their practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Valid Arizona Secondary Education Certificate for the position and subject areas assigned
    • Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC)
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona drivers license
  • Minimum of five years teaching experience required; high school experience preferred
  • Have taught in the Buckeye Union High School District at least one year preferred
  • Success in working collaboratively with colleagues

OCCUPATIONAL CONDITION:

Low risk - Work is routinely performed in indoor environments including exposure to noise and being on your feet for extended periods of time. May be required to travel outdoors in inclement conditions to go from building to building for meetings or classes. The employee may be required to move from room to room through corridors heavily congested with people.

The applicant for this position is required to:

    • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Hearing ability to monitor presence and activity of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide collaborative support to teachers through problem solving modeling lessons scheduling opportunities for peer observations and conducting mini-training sessions.
  • Encourage and facilitate access to other classrooms so that teachers can observe one another and have access to several kinds of effective teaching models.
  • Confer with teachers regarding classroom observations and developing collaborative teams.
  • Engage teachers in self-assessment and reflection of their practice to support continuous improvement and increased student achievement.
  • Stay abreast of research based instructional strategies through professional development and professional reading.
  • Reviews trends in instruction and performance.
  • Assist with providing ongoing staff development opportunities to support high quality teaching and learning.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Principal.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Applying reason to research and solving moderately complex issues with little or no assistance.
  • Interpreting an assortment of instructions furnished in variable forms.
  • Performing basic original research to assist with developing teaching plans and instructional materials.
  • Maintaining and updating documentation.

  • Adding subtracting multiplying and dividing in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals.

  • Best practices trends and emerging technologies.
  • Principles and techniques of effective oral presentations.
  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment.
  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:

The evaluation is done by the Site Principal with input from the Assistant Superintendent of Academics.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The Instructional Specialist reports directly to the Site Principal.
