The Department of Orthopedics is currently seeking a full time Medical Assistant 1 to work in Miami FL. The Medical Assistant (MA) will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA shall assist patients healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality safety and service. The MA provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements standards of care and institutional policies and procedures under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic.
The MA shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice recognize respond to emergencies and demonstrate professionalism. The MA provides care within the philosophy mission vision and values as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.

Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice utilizing State Federal and University of Miamis standards guidelines relevant statutes rules and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.

Core Duties and Qualifications
Abides by the standards for ethical behavior therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatments/exam room with proper supplies instruments and materials as directed.
Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physicians care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.
Perform routine laboratory tests.
Perform vital signs EKG phlebotomy and document in patients medical record.
Observes and reports patients signs or symptoms changes.
Administers medication safely as directed by the physician. Assists in patient care activities such as walking.
Escorts and transports patients to various hospital locations.
Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique.
Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.
Provides patients with providers care instructions and information.
Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Orders stocks and inventories supplies and assists in performing clerical duties.
Adheres to University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguards Universitys assets.
*Note: Designee in charge of the unit shall assign specific functions and competencies pertinent to the unit. Physician in charge shall review and sign-off all Medical Assistants competencies and evaluations.
Important Note: Medical Assistants (MA) working in Hospital-based units will not perform any type of medication administration.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred
Medical Assistant certificate of completion - Program or institute must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education or affiliated.
Credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body organization (See Certification and Licensing list below).
Note: If the Medical Assistant has not obtained a recognized Credentialed Medical Assistant certification at the time of hire certification must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (Certification from American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) (Certification from National Healthcare Association (NHA)
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) obtained by the National Association for Health Professionals. (NAHP)
Additional certification:
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers

Department Specific Functions
Position Summary:
Applicant must have the ability to work under pressure be articulate as well as possessing superior customer service skills. Employee selected for this position will provide clinical support to physicians and nurses. May perform some clerical duties usually answering the telephones etc. The position reports to the Licensed Practical Nurse Supervisor and is responsible for the coordination of the day-to-day activities within the area of responsibility. The applicant must perform duties under minimal supervision.
Essential Duties
Maintains high level of customer service. Excellent patient relations are an essential component of this position.
Provides clinical support to physicians and other medical providers. Assists with minor procedures as needed. Also assists with medication medical supplies and equipment as needed.
Removes sutures/staples assists in wound care under the direct supervision of a physician.
Assesses applies and removes casts splints and other orthopedic devices if necessary.
Coordinates patient flow in/out of the pod with the goal of and emphasis on minimizing waiting time for the patients.
Prepares patient (provides gowns assists patient) area and medications for procedures.
Maintains exam rooms and cast room fully stocked and ensures that rooms are cleaned after each patient. Uses maintains and cleans medical equipment.
Takes and records vital signs. Obtains authorizations for special procedures etc from insurance companies. Labels processes and ships aspirations and needle biopsies.
Assists physician in obtaining pertinent medical information from the patient and is always readily available to the physician throughout the examination to facilitate the management of patient care.
Handles all medical emergencies in a timely and competent manner always putting patients safety first.
Receives and records requests from patients by telephone (medication refills referral requests lab results medical advice etc.).
Responsible for maintaining an appropriate par level of medical/office supplies placing orders in a timely fashion.
Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor.
