Job Summary:
The Head Rental Yard Technician is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the rental yard by managing the service cycle of rental equipment ensuring an organized and customer-friendly facility and providing strong leadership to the rental yard team. This role demands excellent communication a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining high standards in equipment readiness facility maintenance and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
1. Oversee Service Cycle of Rental Equipment
- Manage Rental Yard Technicians to ensure the service cycle flows efficiently.
- Supervise Yard Technicians to ensure tasks are completed thoroughly and on time.
- Review and sign off on servicing of all rental equipment.
- Conduct yard sweeps to check for misplaced tools trash and rental equipment.
- Oversee opening and closing procedures for the rental department.
- Collaborate with front counter employees to prioritize equipment servicing.
- Partner with the manager to document and refine processes.
- Use FLY to stay updated with hard and soft down rental equipment and reservations.
- Verify item maintenance files during services to ensure annual checks and readiness.
- Maintain strong communication with the manager and sales representatives to ensure timely task completion.
- Handle rental service calls and work with customers before escalating to the manager.
- Submit part requests to the parts department and service manager.
- Confirm with the front counter at the end of the day for add-ons and ensure next-day reservations are prepped staged and ready.
2. Manage Facility Layout
- Ensure all equipment is ready to rent and properly stored.
- Maintain an organized yard for efficient use of employee and customer time.
- Perform regular yard sweeps to ensure the facility is clean and runs efficiently.
- Use end-of-day (EOD) end-of-week (EOW) and end-of-month (EOM) checklists.
- Create and maintain a mid-day facility sweep checklist.
3. Manage Direct Reports
- Coordinate and manage lunch schedules for Yard Operations Staff (YOS).
- Train Yard Technicians on new processes and provide onboarding for new employees.
- Assist Yard Technicians when challenges arise.
- Use GWC (Get It Want It Capacity) and PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) to ensure all Yard Technicians meet performance standards.
4. Customer Operations
- Ensure customers are promptly greeted and assisted.
- Demonstrate and explain equipment to customers as needed.
- Assist with loading and unloading customer equipment when necessary.
- Direct traffic customers and employees during busy times.
5. Equipment Cleaning and Documentation Policies
- Ensure all returned equipment is inspected for cleanliness and charge cleaning fees when necessary.
- Communicate cleaning fee policies clearly to customers and ensure proper documentation in rental records.
- Implement and oversee process for capturing clear detailed pictures of all equipment:
- Before equipment is rented to document its condition.
- Upon return to identify and document damages or issues.
- Train Yard Technicians to consistently follow equipment cleaning and picture capturing procedures.
- Ensure cleaning fees and damage assessments are communicated to the front counter and reflected in customer transactions.
While these are the primary roles and responsibilities of this position there may be times when assistance in other departments is required and flexibility is expected to adapt and support the overall benefit of the customer and the company.
