Key responsibilities
- Carry out design production activities for assigned projects as needed.
- At CD and/or SD stage prepare viable alternative structural concepts study these in relation to suitability constructability and economy and propose the most suitable alternative. Agree on the most suitable alternative with the Project Principal assigned to the project (and with the Cost Engineer if appropriate).
- Discuss and agree with the Project Lead the appropriate analysis modeling strategies and software for use on the project.
- Prepare structural designs from concept through to detailed design which achieve the following minimum criteria: safe to sustain required loadings; achieve durability serviceability and functional requirements; are reasonably economic designed in accordance with international codes.
- Carry out detailed design coordination with all other disciplines.
- Manage other professionals on a project basis. Ensure that work produced is to the required quality produced on time and within man-hour budget.
- Together with Project Lead identify requirements for specialist inputs and ensure that these are obtained at appropriate times during the design process and are incorporated into the structural design (e.g. wind tunnel geotechnical/foundation engineering façade engineering PT/PS concrete design etc.)
- Together with Project Lead carry out reviews at appropriate intervals during the design process. At a minimum this will be at the end of each design stage. However interim reviews may be required.
- Ensure that the structural departments QMS is being implemented and that the engineers assigned to QMS functions are fulfilling these functions effectively (on a project basis).
- Monitor project progress and report to Project Lead on actual or anticipated time and/or man-hour over-runs.
- Recommend to the Project Lead personnel requirements for projects.
- Anticipate and solve technical difficulties for projects which present new challenges to the core experience of the department.
- Respond to site RFIs conduct reviews of specialist supplier/contractor prepared designs and attend site meetings to resolve construction problems related to structures.
- Inspect assess and report on existing structures.
- Attend formal (and informal) design team meetings with other disciplines municipality representatives site personnel and client representatives etc.
- Display a positive professional attitude in the Departments dealings with other design disciplines clients and other members of the project team.
- May perform other duties as required.
- Perform the role of Project Lead on one or multiple projects.
- Other Tasks and responsibilities
- Provides formal supervision to individual employees within single functional or operational area.
- Plans and monitors for appropriate staffing levels and utilization of resources.
- Mentors and coaches team members to further develop competencies.
Qualifications :
Experience Required
- Minimum of 8-12 years of experience in structural engineering design.
- Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office Suite including MS Project.
- Ability to use structural analysis and design software including at least one and preferably several of the following: STAAD ROBOT ETABS SAFE ADAPT AutoCAD REVIT Core Knowledge Skills and Attributes
- Thorough understanding of structural behavior soil/structure interaction local and international design codes and standards.
- Ability to manage motivate and encourage creativity in fellow design professionals.
- Demonstrates experience in managing and designing large and/or complex structural projects from concept design through to construction document production.
- Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal communication.
- Computational engineering capabilities such as automation applications advanced analysis scripting optimizations and awareness of AI engineering. Position Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in civil or Structural Engineering
- Masters degree in engineering is preferred
