Job Summary

Position Summary

The Transportation Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the districts transportation department to ensure safe efficient and reliable student transportation services. The position provides leadership to transportation staff ensures compliance with state and federal regulations manages routing and scheduling and support transportation services for education and extracurricular activities. The Transportation Supervisor collaborates with school administrators mechanics and District leadership to promote student safety and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Transportation Operations & Oversight

  • Oversee daily transportation operations including regular routes field trips and activity trips.
  • Develop maintain and adjust bus routes and schedules to maximize efficiency and safety.
  • Monitor daily route coverage and respond to absences delays and emergency situations.
  • Coordinate transportation services with building administrators and District staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations provide coaching and support professional development.
  • Perform route driving duties only when essential for substitute coverage or emergencies.

Staff Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise all transportation personnel including bus drivers mechanics and support staff while promoting a positive team-oriented and safety-focused work culture.
  • Assist with recruitment training scheduling and evaluation of transportation personnel.
  • Promote safe driving practices professionalism and positive student interactions.
  • Support staff training in safety procedures student management and regulatory compliance.

Safety Compliance & Training

  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal transportation regulations licensing requirements and District policies.
  • Oversee driver qualification files training documentation and required certifications.
  • Coordinate safety training emergency drills and accident prevention programs.
  • Investigate transportation incidents and accidents coordinate appropriate drug/alcohol testing when necessary and prepare required documentation.

Fleet & Equipment Coordination

  • Collaborate with mechanics to ensure safe well-maintained buses.
  • Assists with scheduling vehicle inspections maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitor vehicle usage cleanliness and safety equipment.

Administrative & Financial Responsibilities

  • Assist with budgeting purchasing and cost monitoring for transportation operations.
  • Review and verify transportation-related payroll and substitute driver usage.
  • Maintain accurate transportation records reports ad compliance documentation.
  • Assist with long-term planning for fleet replacement and service improvements.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Serve as a point of contact for parents/guardians staff and community members regarding transportation use.
  • Communicate route changes delays and service updates in a timely and professional manner.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required; associate or bachelors degree preferred.
  • Experience in school transportation logistics fleet operations or supervisory roles required.
  • Knowledge of state pupil transportation laws and regulations strongly preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements required or ability to obtain within District-specified timeframe.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of school transportation operations and safety requirements.
  • Ability to supervise staff and manage complex schedules and routing systems.
  • Strong problem-solving communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency or high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency with routing software GPS systems and basic computer applications.
  • Commitment to student safety and service excellence.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting walking standing and computer use.
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to inspect buses and operate in garage or outdoor environments as needed.

Work Environment

  • Transportation office bus garage and school site settings.
  • Exposure to noise vehicle exhaust and varying weather conditions.
  • Early mornings evenings and weekends to support transportation needs.
