Job Summary About the Role

Assist with enhancing the physical appearance and experience of the Park District for residents and visitors to our parks and facilities.

Knowledge Skills & Experience

This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative is an effective written and oral communicator is reliable and safety-minded.

Required: High school graduate. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must demonstrate a willingness to be trained and become proficient in the safe operation of equipment and tools that include the woodchipper chainsaw grounds equipment vehicles mowers and pruning tools. A valid State drivers license is necessary. Must obtain a Pesticide Applicator license within 30 days of hire. Must have or complete Mandated Reporter certification within 30 days of hire date.

Preferred: Horticulture tree care and chainsaw experience are preferred.

Essential Functions of the Position

Park District Cornerstones

  • Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park Districts safety and risk management program.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents colleagues the public PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
  • Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
  • Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.

Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Parks and Planning the Assistant Superintendent of Parks and the Arborist Supervisor the Arborist Associate shall complete all assigned duties to the best of their abilities and be ever mindful of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District and of fellow employees. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:

  • Assist the Arborist Supervisor and Arborist Assistant in the completion of assigned duties that may include removing trees clearing brush pruning branches raking turf and beds and other related duties as assigned under the supervision of the Arborist.
  • Act as the bucket truck spotter and ground safety monitor to help ensure the safety of the tree crew other park district employees and park visitors.
  • Maintain a safe worksite for park visitors by identifying and removing hazards providing advance warning to visitors in close proximity to worksite and worksite cleanup as directed so that the site is left safe for park visitors.
  • Assist with the training and supervision of seasonal employees at worksites as assigned by the Arborist.
  • Spray noxious weeds and fertilize trees as directed.
  • Effectively maintain assigned areas and facilities as directed by Supervisory personnel.
  • Willingly work over and above required daily hours when necessary.
  • Operate motor equipment as needed or required.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Marginal Functions of the Position

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Assist the Horticulture and Naturalist Crews as assigned.
