Position Title: EcoCamp Assistant Director

Reports to: Camp Leadership

Overview

Pickering Creek Audubon Center conserves natural habitats on Marylands Eastern Shore by engaging and empowering our community through exploration education and stewardship. The Center includes 450 acres of mature hardwood forests fresh and brackish wetlands meadow agriculture and over a mile of shoreline.

Pickering Creeks EcoCamp has been traditionally well subscribed to by campers with the program typically selling out. The camp provides rewarding and engaging outdoor experiences with nature that inspire kids to want to be outside. Camp leaders provide activities that encourage exploration guiding campers to new experiences and helping them find what interests them in nature.

Position Summary

This position is seasonal and part-time beginning March 1 2026. Hours are variable from March through May and increase to 28-40 per week in June through August 14 2026. The Assistant Director will work closely with Pickering Creek Audubon Centers leadership to supervise the three EcoCamp Counselors and teen volunteers (aka Junior Naturalists) to run our successful seven week-long nature-themed day camp for K-7th graders. A camp week typically runs Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm with campers onsite from 9 am to 4 pm.

  • Collaborate with EcoCamp Leadership and Center staff to plan and oversee daily camp logistics including but not limited to camp check in/check out daily schedule of activities managing behavior and conflicts and maintaining EcoCamp sites and equipment.
  • Collaborate in training and supervision of three EcoCamp Counselors during seven weeks of camp and step-in as a Counselor as needed.
  • Collaborate with EcoCamp Leadership and Center Staff in EcoCamp program planning and development of programming camper activities and camper family communications.
  • With Camp Director manage and monitor aspects of annual camp certification process through Maryland Department of Health.
  • With Camp Director train and supervise teen Junior Naturalists including mentoring the EcoCamp Counselors on how best to supervise the teen volunteers and use them effectively.
  • Create a fun and safe environment so campers can explore discover and play at their own pace throughout our forest creek and wetlands. You must be prepared to get dirty and investigate the natural world alongside the campers as they self-direct their exploration.
    • Jumpstart child-led exploration create activities appropriate for each age group weekly camp theme and habitat.
    • Work with camp staff to make adjustments to activities and tools provided to campers based on interest group dynamic and weather.
  • Work with the EcoCamp Leadership and Center Staff to train the Counselors and Junior Naturalist on handling protocols for program animals (turtles and snakes).
  • Work with staff to clean and maintain Pickering Creeks trails buildings and equipment.
  • Applicants must be available to work on Saturdays June 6 and 13 for the Centers annual fundraising event and junior staff training.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Lifeguarding experience or ability to work with Pickering Creek to obtain certification before the start of EcoCamp (Monday June 15 2026).
  • Canoe/kayak experience or ability to learn. Must be comfortable canoeing with children.
  • Enjoy working with others and children of all ages in an outdoor setting.
  • Energetic flexible patient and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to supervise others.
  • Professional and friendly manner.
