Summary
The Clinical Support Technician (CST) provides patient-centered care and safe transportation under the direction of a registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the inter-disciplinary team. This non-licensed team member supports inpatient rehabilitation (including specialized spinal cord injury care) and patient transport to/from facilities and appointments. Work performed must support the mission vision values and standards of Mary Free Bed System.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Quality Pillar of Excellence Patient Care
Under RN delegation and in accordance with hospital/department policies and demonstrated competencies the CST:
- Assessment Support & Monitoring
- Collects and reports physiologic psychological socio-cultural and spiritual needs to the RN.
- Obtains and records vital signs height/weight intake & output and specified measurements accurately and timely.
- Monitors patients via virtual monitoring systems; communicates clearly via headset as applicable.
- Direct Patient Care
- Provides patient care treatment and services within the scope of their license certification or registration and as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.
- Provides hygiene feeding specimen collection positioning safe ambulation/transfers and ADL support using proper body mechanics and equipment.
- SCI-specific (after competency validation): Performs sterile intermittent catheterization (SIC) bowel programs and scheduled showers for designated patient populations; reinforces education initially provided by the nurse; helps determine scheduling in collaboration with RN/IDT.
- Acts as safety attendant (sitter) when assigned.
- Answers call lights promptly and respectfully.
- Provides diversion/comfort activities and respects patient dignity and rights.
- Documentation & Communication
- Documents care per policy (content accuracy and timeliness).
- Provides input for individualized plans of care.
- Communicate effectively with RNs therapists and team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Environment & Equipment
- Maintains clean safe patient and work areas; cleans equipment; removes malfunctioning devices from service and notifies appropriate department/leader.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of patient-care equipment per competency.
Transport & Campus Support
- Provides safe compassionate transportation by wheelchair stretcher or company vehicle for patients family members and visitors within and between facilities.
- Drives for outings and hospital activities including trips of up to 3 hours each way maintaining professionalism alertness and situational awareness.
- Protects confidentiality (HIPAA) secures patient belongings and ensures a welcoming dignified experience.
- Works effectively in varied environmental conditions and remains reliable during inclement weather.
Service Pillar of Excellence Customer Service
- Delivers excellent customer service to patients families colleagues and providers; models MFB Standards of Behavior.
- Understands department patient satisfaction measures and participates in action plans to improve the patient experience.

- Stays informed about policy/practice updates via huddles bulletins email intranet and meetings.
- Completes mandatory education and competency assessments by deadlines.
- Participates in annual performance evaluations and establishes goals with leadership.
- Precepting (as assigned): Supports onboarding and education of new hires including best practices for bowel management on inpatient floors.
Safety & Infection Prevention
- Follows all hospital safety and infection prevention policies; maintains a safe clean environment.
- Uses PPE standard precautions and reports safety concerns promptly.

- Accurately documents chargeable items per policy.
- Avoids waste and duplication of supplies.
- Practices dependable attendance; works efficiently throughout the shift and requests additional tasks from RN/leadership when needed.

Customer Service Responsibilities
Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages coaches and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.
Responsibilities in Quality Improvement
Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
Essential Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- BLS (American Heart Association) for Healthcare Providers - current or within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to read write and communicate clearly in English (including use of communication devices).
- Ability to follow written oral and diagram instructions; understand 24-hour/military time.
- Customer service skills; professional courteous demeanor.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask; problem-resolution skills.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules extended hours and in inclement weather as role demands.
- If assigned to driving duties:
- Valid drivers license in state of employment.
- Meets fleet insurance requirements (e.g. no OWI/OWVI and 4 points).
- Chauffeur license preferred on hire; required within first 2 weeks of employment (if role includes driving).
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
- Previous experience as a nurse technician/nursing assistant hospital transport hospital security/law enforcement or healthcare customer service.
- Computer proficiency.
