General Definition of Work
The director of transportation under minimal supervision performs senior level work with extensive decision-making discretion to ensure that all students are provided safe and efficient transportation to and from school. This job has direct control of the following functions: vehicle maintenance management routing and scheduling and daily personnel management of staff recruitment school bus safety and accident investigation. Employee performs highly advanced and supervisory work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures related to Transportation services under the direction of the Executive Director of Facilities and Maintenance.

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Montgomery County Schools. Montgomery County Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions
- Adhere to all state federal and local laws policies and procedures
- Lead manage supervise and evaluate assigned staff/programs in the district
- Facilitate and participate in the preparation of state and local budget requests
- Ensure that all periodic vehicle maintenance is performed satisfactorily and on schedule
- Serve as liaison with school administrators to resolve transportation issues
- Facilitate and/or participate in projects to promote school bus safety
- Administer and oversee all transportation budgets and preparation of statistics and reports of budget items
- Supervise and participate in investigation of traffic accident
- Participate in redistricting for new schools prepare reports and makes recommendations
- Monitor and supervise inventory control and maintenance of computerized vehicle/equipment records and vehicle warranty
- Supervise a routing department that maintains integrity of student transportation database school boundaries and bus route information
- Responsible for continuous analysis of bus routes and staff time to maximize efficiency
- Oversee research to assess cost savings for transportation department
- Implement and supervise drug testing program for district CDL holders as required
- Oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive bus driver handbook
- Responsible for random field observation to ensure excellence within the transportation department
- Complete local state or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
- Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
- Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
- Facilitate the development of the departments improvement plan
- Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge Skills Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal state and local polices/codes and procedures regarding school buses and transportation of students
- Comprehensive knowledge of daily personnel management of staff and recruitment
- Comprehensive knowledge of school bus safety and accident investigation requirements/protocols
- Thorough knowledge of vehicle maintenance management
- Working knowledge of bus routing
- Ability to define and prioritize facility needs develop short-term and long-term plans to meet those needs and create appropriate workflow
- Skilled in technology with demonstrated ability to use spreadsheet software and word processing software
- Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
- Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
- Ability to learn and use specialized tools equipment or software related to business needs
- Ability to develop monitor and implement a fiscally sound budget
- Ability to direct and evaluate the work of others
- Ability to implement local state and federal rules guidelines and procedures into daily business operations

Education and Experience
- Bachelors degree with a focus in management or administration preferred
- Minimum of five (5) years experience supervising pupil transportation preferred
- Equivalent combination of experience and education
Special Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid Drivers License or ability to provide own transportation
- Must maintain a safe driving record
- Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Work requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Work regularly requires exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
- Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
- Ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work
- Ability to move to other work locations
- Visual acuity requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data operating standard office equipment and the use of advanced technology
- Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office light traffic)
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
- Must be adaptable to performing under mild to high levels of stress
- Must be on-call as a regular part of the job
