This is a full-time twelve-months fixed-term role on Crick terms and conditions of employment.

Due to the operational nature of the role there is an expectation of on-site attendance for approximately 70% of working days.

About the role

We are looking for an EDI Manager to join our Equality Diversity and Inclusion Team on a 12 month fixed term contract.

As the UKs leading biomedical research institute the Crick has a significant opportunity to demonstrate sector leadership on inclusive research and research culture. Working closely with the EDI Lead and Head of Talent and Organisational Development you will play a central role in shaping priorities governing delivery and ensuring momentum is maintained across high-profile programmes.

This is both a strategic and a hands-on role. You will lead key programmes personally including development of positive action pathways and innovative beacon programme ensuring that ambitious ideas translate into visible outcomes that strengthen inclusive culture and research practice. The role will include deputising for the EDI Lead as needed including the management and development of a small team that balances long-term planning with practical delivery.

This role provides leadership continuity and delivery capacity for equality diversity and inclusion at the Crick. Building on the foundations of the Inclusion Strategy the Institute is entering a critical phase of development that calls for confident strategic stewardship alongside strong visible delivery.

As the EDI Manager you will influence direction partner across science and operations and represents the Crick externally with funders collaborators and sector bodies. You will work closely with senior scientific leaders and supports the Institutes contribution to sector-wide initiatives.

What you will be doing

Immediate priorities in the first 6-8 months will include:

  • Work with the EDI Lead to develop and implement the Cricks Inclusion Strategy ensuring strong alignment with funder priorities and the Institutes long-term research culture goals.
  • Manage the Cricks contribution to a significant new EDI life sciences sector-wide initiative delivered in partnership with an external organisation and supported by grant funding. Includes a focus on creating beacon content for the biomedical sciences and strengthening the Institutes influence across the sector.
  • Continue to ensure strong alignment between the Inclusion Strategy the Athena Swan programme and wider organisational and People Team priorities
  • Mentor and support the EDI Advisor to Programme Manage the delivery of the 2025 Athena Swan action plan and prepare the Crick for a Silver application in 2029/2030 working closely with the Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team Chair (project sponsor).
  • Work with colleagues across Talent & OD and the wider People Team to improve recruitment progression recognition and inclusive leadership practice.
  • Lead the development of a robust evidence base for action evaluation and reporting including quantitative EDI data and qualitative insight and commissioning research where appropriate. Produce an annual EDI data report enabling evaluation against KPIs Inclusion Strategy objectives and mandatory Athena Swan requirements.
  • Build beacon activities that influence the biomedical sciences and strengthen the Cricks reputation as a leader in equality diversity and inclusion.

About you:

  • Persuasive influencer able to build strong relationships with senior leaders scientific colleagues funders and a wide range of stakeholders. *
  • Excellent strategic planning and project leadership skills including prioritisation risk management and delivery in complex environments. *
  • Thorough knowledge of UK equality legislation and a strong understanding of current issues and best practice across gender race disability and LGBT equity. *
  • Excellent verbal communication facilitation and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills with the ability to build evidence and explain complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Experience of working in EDI organisational development research culture or culture and behaviour change roles in a complex organisation. *
