Do you enjoy working with elders and their families If so the Maine DBVI Rehabilitation Counselor I may be very well suited to your interests and strengths.

Elders with blindness and visual impairments and their families have unique sets of needs for which they receive support and direct service from a wide range of providers agencies and systems within their home and community. The role of the Rehabilitation Counselor I is identifying support needs and making service referrals to blindness professionals for individuals who are blind and visually impaired and seeking to maintain their independence at their residences and in their communities. The Rehabilitation Counselor I offers consultation service coordination and connection to resources to address vision related obstacles that interfere with individuals efforts to maintain their independence. The position can be based out of our Bangor Augusta Lewiston or Portland office.

This position:

  • Manages an Independent Living caseload
  • Evaluates client information services available and program needs develop a treatment plan and identify implementation method.
  • Manages a client budget plan to ensure effective delivery of services and use of available funds.
  • Determines initial and continuing eligibility for services to adhere to program policies and standards.
  • Consults with blindness rehabilitation specialists community agencies medical specialists social service agencies on independent living rehabilitation in order to provide guidance support and assistance.
  • Provides administrative support for the Vocational Rehabilitation program

Minimum Qualifications:

A four (4) year combination of training experience and/or education in vocational rehabilitation program development and implementation.

Experience working with individuals who are blind or have low vision and/or working with elders preferred.
