Job Summary

As a Staff Attorney at SARC you will play a vital role in providing legal services to our clients.

Responsibilities include:

  • Represent clients in court protection orders and divorce and/or custody cases
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with court personnel evaluators and agencies.
  • Gather evidence in protective order divorce custody to formulate defense or to initiate legal action.
  • Conduct research interviews clients and witnesses and handles other details in preparation for trial.
  • Prepare and file/e-file legal pleadings and briefs and develops strategies arguments and testimony in preparation for trial.
  • Interpret laws rulings and regulations for individuals.
  • Provide legal counseling to clients on a variety of matters not limited to but including filing complaints and pro se preparation
  • Develop ongoing safety plans for clients
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records docketing and statistics on all clients.
  • Assume responsibility of scheduled and unscheduled Helpline calls
  • Assist with unscheduled clients/walk-ins.
  • Collaborate in the auditing and closing process of inactive clients.
  • Occasionally assist the Director of Legal Services in the supervision of Legal Advocates/Paralegals.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Necessary Skills:

  • Ability to read analyze and interpret the most complex documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints orally and in writing and the ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial issues to the court and/or public groups.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical equations including those involving units of American currency plus the ability to understand the compilation of statistical data.
  • Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions plus the ability to interpret legal documents statutes case law and legislative history.


Requirements for Consideration:

  • Graduate of an ABA Accredited Law School with a Juris Doctorate and knowledge of civil criminal and domestic law.
  • Must be a member in good standing of Maryland Bar.
  • Experience practicing family law.


Preferred Experience:

1year of experience working on family law matters preferred but not required

Required Skills:

Necessary Skills: Knowledge of intensive psychosocial services such as casework group work and individual and family therapy. Ability to work under pressure within time constraints. Knowledge of and adherence to laws policies procedures and ethical standards of the counseling profession. Willing and able to attend ongoing Trauma Informed Care trainings and webinars to stay current with trends in intervention. Excellent speaking and listening skills. Requirements for Consideration: Minimum of a Bachelors Degree is required preferably within Human Services. Previous experience managing people. Valid drivers license and a clean driving record within the provisions of the agencys policy. The ability to complete SARCs 30-hour Basic Crisis Response training within 3 months of the date of hire. Preferred Experience: Experience working with vulnerable populations and victims/survivors of domestic violence sexual abuse and stalking.
