Primary Purpose:

Provide individualized or small group academic support and instruction to students who reside in a facility for medical and/or psychological reasons ensuring alignment with curriculum goals and compliance with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Collaborate with teachers of record parents and district staff to facilitate continued academic progress emotional well-being and adherence to State and district policies.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
  • Masters degree (preferred)
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education
  • Valid Texas drivers license with a clear driving history

Experience

  • At least one (1) year of clinical teaching (preferred); one year of teaching experience may substitute for clinical teaching experience
  • Special Education experience or experience in a similar position (preferred)
  • Experience with working with students in residential facilities (preferred)

Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of subjects range from PK-12
  • Training in behavior management and learning principles
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students with significant behavior challenges
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate with facility staff while maintaining district policies
  • Bilingual proficiency in English with conversational Spanish-speaking skills (preferred)

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency Board policies and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional/learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect accommodation for individual needs of students assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with other special education campus teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Cooperate with members of the home campus in planning and implementing instructional goals objectives and methods according to district requirements.
  • Implement as designed by the students teacher of record and other cooperating professionals an instructional program for each homebound student assigned.
  • Cooperate with facility staff to implement homebound instruction while maintaining both district and facility standards.
  • Flexibility with schedule changes to accommodate facility situations.
  • Integrate technologies when possible in the homebound setting to support the teaching/learning process.
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.

Student Engagement and Support

  • Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the School District.
  • Develop and maintain an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical social and emotional development of students.
  • Assist in the selection of books equipment and other instructional materials that support the students teacher of record lesson plan.
  • Work closely with the students parents and family for an understanding and progress toward a solution to the students academic problems.
  • Meet with each student as documented in the students IEP to provide instruction.
  • Maintain and submit complete reports for parents teachers of record and the Special Education Supervisor.

Safety and Professionalism

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Be mindful of safety needs with regard to materials required to complete academic tasks with students.
  • Ensure the safety and health of all students notifying the administration of any unsafe conditions and following established procedures.
  • Notify appropriate personnel immediately of evidence of substance abuse child abuse child neglect severe medical or social conditions potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
  • Yield to facility staff with behavior crises arise.
  • Participate in training of Safety Intervention Plans led by facility designated BCBA.
  • Demonstrate professional ethical and responsible behavior showing appropriate boundaries when instructing in a students home environment.
  • Always exhibit professional judgment and responsibility.
  • Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained while exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students campus personnel and parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues students parents and community members.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain records and provide evidence of growth and progress to the teacher of record parents facility case managers social workers and students.
  • Take responsibility for obtaining all necessary textbooks and materials for the student.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings committee meetings and work sessions as the supervisor requires.
  • Follow attendance policy as assigned by the supervisor.

Professional Growth and Conduct

  • Promote professional improvement through reading educational journals and books exploring educational research enrolling in college courses participating in staff development activities and membership in professional organizations.
  • Exhibit flexibility to adapt to a continuously changing environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent integrity good moral character and initiative.
  • Follow all rules regulations and policies of Denton ISD and directives from superiors.

Other Duties:

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures unless outlined as a facility-led protocol.
  • Participate in professional development department meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the department.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise; frequent districtwide and occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
