Reporting to the Ecological Monitoring Ecologist the Natural Areas Field Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological health of our natural spaces and ensuring compliance with the City of Edmontons environmental standards. This role requires effective management of tasks and time along with strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.
In this role you can expect to:
- Conduct bird nest walkthroughs and sweeps wildlife surveys and breeding bird surveys in various landscapes
- Identify active nest sites currently being used by wildlife and implement setbacks
- Complete nest buffer monitoring and nest checks as required
- Collect data in the field with GIS Software including wildlife features species and nest sweep data and other ecological attributes
- Work with the Wildlife Technicians to confirm timing and priority of sites requiring assessment
- Communicate with stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective nest sweeps
- Conduct ecological and restoration monitoring and share recommendations
- Set up and monitor wildlife cameras autonomous recording units and other sensors
- Ensure compliance with safety and ENVISO requirements
- Research into best practices and work to minimize the overall disturbance footprint for wildlife
- Respond to public complaints or inquiries orally or in writing
- Assist with creating educational and engaging content for social media posts
- Perform other related work as required

- Completion of a 2 year diploma with an ecology biology landscape or a related field
- A minimum of 2 years experience in wildlife surveys or related experience
Assets:
- Professional Biologist or other related professional designations
- Avian Nest Sweeps and Monitoring Methods training
- Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of wildlife survey techniques and practices
- Knowledge of best practices in forest grassland or wetland ecology
- Ability to visually and acoustically identify bird species and identify other wildlife
- Ability to identify native plants and legislated weeds
- Ability to write detailed reports and maintain detailed records
- Ability to use ArcGIS software and ESRI applications
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively deal with the public
- Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
- Strong innovative and problem solving skills
- Proficiency in Google applications including but not limited to Google Doc Google Sheets and Google Meets
- Knowledge of Municipal Provincial and Federal environmental policies and regulations

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent)
- Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
Work Environment:
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
