Job Summary

About the Role

The Deputy Head of Flys will work closely with the Head Flyman to support the operation of the fly floor stage machinery and all staging transitions within Opera Australias Technical Division. You will help supervise complex scene changes and contribute to the safe smooth and precise delivery of every performance. This role is vital to bringing our productions to life and is classified as Deputy Head Flyman Level 3.5 under the Opera Australia Technical Staff Enterprise Agreement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise production operations including the implementation of procedures and techniques on the fly floor and oversee the safe use and maintenance of stage machinery.
  • Apply theatrical rigging techniques coordinate changeovers and act changes and supervise all staging-related operations.
  • Utilise practical knowledge of carpentry techniques metal fabrication and associated tools to support production requirements.
  • Lead and develop team members through demonstration guidance and clear communication.
  • Manage the procurement and maintenance of materials and hardware recommending suitable alternatives where required.
  • Maintain accurate production records reports and notes including documentation of changes improvements and scenery updates.

About You

  • Hold a Rigging High Risk Work Licence Intermediate or Advanced classification is highly desirable.
  • Minimum 35 years experience in theatrical rigging fly floor operations or large-scale live performance environments.
  • Advanced experience in rope access is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with the installation and operation of chain hoists.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sound understanding of WHS practices and commitment to maintaining a safe workplace.
