Salary: 39129 - 46023
Hours: 36 per week 52 weeks

We are looking for an enthusiastic social work practitioner to join our Throughcare and Aftercare Team to work with Looked After and formerly Looked After young people aged 16 to 25. We are a multi-disciplinary team undertaking the City of Edinburghs ongoing statutory responsibility to offer support advice and guidance to this cohort of young people and assisting them to make successful transitions as they leave care and beyond.

Located alongside Throughcare and Aftercare colleagues the post holder will work with all young people leaving care however a large proportion of their role will be to assess need and develop effective support plans for young people who are unaccompanied and seeking asylum.

The post holder will be experienced in working collaboratively with others and will take a lead role in carrying out age assessments of young people presenting as Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children and will support other social work staff in age assessment processes. Training will be provided for this.

The post holder will also act as a resource to colleagues within Children Services offering guidance and insight to managers and staff regarding immigration legislation as it impacts on Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking young people.

The role may be subject to change due to a recent Childrens Services Review.

Applicants must hold a Social Work qualification recognised by the SSSC.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. Anunconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.

Responsibilities

Experience:

  • Previous Social work or student placement experience that demonstrates an ability to transfer knowledge skills and practice.
  • Experience of working with children and young people and other agencies
  • Experience of working as part of a Team
  • Experience of completing assessments developing outcome focussed plans and delivering interventions
  • Experience of supporting people to manage transitions (Desirable)
  • Experience of Financial assessments in relation to legislation. (Desirable)
  • Experience of group work (Desirable)

Knowledge skills and understanding:

  • Knowledge of Social work legislation and policy in relation to Care leavers.
  • Knowledge of Child and Adolescent development.
  • Knowledge of Social work theory and models of interventions relevant to Looked After children and young people.
  • Knowledge of theories legislation and national policies pertaining to children and young people who are/have been Looked after. (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of The Promise (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of Corporate Parenting (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of housing/homelessness legislation and organisations (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of employment legislation and organisations (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of Children and Families and Health and Social care resources (Desirable)
  • I.T skills competent in the use of Microsoft office and experience of using electronic databases. (Desirable)

Qualifications and training:

  • Recognised Social work qualification and registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)
  • Post qualifying training in e.g. Child Protection and or Adult Support and protection (Desirable)

Job specific requirements:

  • The ability to work in partnership with children young people and parents/carers and other professionals in a restorative manner.
  • Ability to form and sustain productive working relationships
  • The ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and with our Throughcare and Aftercare service partners.
  • Ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
  • The ability to gather and analyse complex information to form assessments of need and risk and recommendations.
  • Ability to recognise and respond to diversity and engage with young people to promote change as agreed through their Pathway Assessment and Plan.
  • Ability to develop plans that are Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic and Time based (SMART) with young people and relevant others which improve outcomes.
  • Ability to compile reports for professional purposes
  • Can deal effectively with conflict and manage challenging behaviour
  • Recognises and works within professional boundaries
  • An ability to reflect on practice self others and the organisation.
  • A commitment to learning and continuous professional development.
  • Ability to facilitate groups (Desirable)
  • Ability to carry out Financial Assessments in relation to relevant Legislation (Desirable)
